Love.
Was that what they had? All those late night talks or early morning chats. All those hugs and words of comfort they shared. All those time they'd been side to side all time, every time. All those silent conversations as their eyes tell stories to each other. All those arguments, those fights they had. Was it all love?
If it was love then why is there always a tragedy headed their way? If it was love then why life was so against them, it turned everything against them? If it was love then why can't they be together?
Ironically, it is true that when two people loves, they don't always end up together and two people who end up together don't always love.
What if someone is actually made for someone else? It may sound unrealistic but, what if? Like soulmates,or,like a missing piece of a whole. What if they were missing parts of each other?
What if?
---Steve sat down by Natasha's bed as soon as Bruce allowed him to get in. The doctor had finally thought of a solution, something regarding her heartbeat. The rest of the team was restless as they waited for her outside, spread all over the building, nothing but worries. They understood that Steve needed to be by her side and despite the problems Steve and Natasha had, they believed that Natasha would want to see him if-- when she wakes up.
Funny, he thought, not long ago it was him in her condition. He remembered faint sounds of her sobbing as she sat by his bed and talked to him while he was asleep. Now it was his turn as he tried to hold back his tears as he reached for her hand and gave it a squeeze.
The tears of sadness, frustration and despair pooled on the corner of his eyes. Before, he had to keep his composure, he was the leader of the team, he needs to be strong, for them, for her. Now, where there's only him and Natasha, it threatened to stream down his cheeks as his eyes stung as his brain registered all the possible things that could happen to Natasha. His mind went into worst depths, up into the point where he thought she'd die.
From the thought, he had considered all the ways he can help her so she'd not be gone. Yes, he trusted Bruce and his abilities but, there's a million possibilities here and he can't risk to lose her. A really stupid idea came into his serious consideration, should he bring himself to Ivan, the man behind all this, in return for the cure for Natasha? No, no, no that'd be suicide, the team and Fury have rejected and disagreed to the idea as he proposed the idea to them earlier before he went to watch over Natasha. But what if it's the only chance to keep her alive? If it was, he'd take it. No matter what consequences he'll face, so be it.
A tear slipped. Then two.
He tried hard to contain his sobs but just seemed to failed. He took his hands and wiped his tears off. All their memories shared replayed in his mind, making it even harder to fight back tears
After they had found Barnes, before she went to him and told him how she thought how he was a good man, the reason why Steve had gone mad, she made Steve promised her something.
"Steve?"
"Hmm?"
"Promise me something," she said sternly as she looked at him in the eye, "please," she added.
"Okay," he said as he nodded his head, a bit uncertain of what she'd make him promise.
"Don't you ever pull that move, ever again," she said and he raised his eyebrows in question.
She took a deep breathe and said,"don't put your life on the line for me, don't do that. People die because of me, I don't want you to be one of them."
He closed the gap between them and took her hands into his,"you know I can't promise you that. I'd do anything to protect you."
"I'd do too."
Yet there he was, sitting in the med room as he watched her asleep. A reminder how he failed to protect her and keep her safe. He felt he disappointed her, that he let her down. What's the use of training with a group of enhanced people to protect the Earth while he can't even protect the woman he loves? It'll all mean nothing. In the end, if he saves the day, saves the human race from global destruction or anything as deathly, it would all mean nothing if he got no one to go home to when it's all over.
Stay positive, his fellow teammates told him, despite the fact that they themselves do not seem very positive in this whole situation. How can he be positive when the only thing keeping her alive is machines? How can he be positive if he sees her in that condition? He can only think of losing her. How it'd hurt. How it aches his heart.
A stream of tears flowed down his cheeks, his eyes red and nose running. He wasn't the type who'd cry easily, but he can't resist the sadness overwhelming him. It's just too much. He wants her awake. He wants to see that smirk of hers. He wants to see her red hair everywhere he'd look. He wants to see how she strides confidently everywhere she goes. He wants to see her smile. He wants her in his arms.
He took her knuckles and gave it a kiss and gave it a little rub, "wake up, Nat. I missed you."
The door opened as Bruce lets himself in with a clipboard and his lab coat. He walked towards Steve and gave him a pat on his shoulder, "I've got the cure."
"Well what are you waiting for? Give it to her!"
"There's just one other problem."
