I should have been paying attention to where I was going. I ran into someone and before I had time to look up to see who it was, I started falling backwards. Something was wrapping around me, the person's arms, and stopped my fall. Then I looked up. It was a boy in a basketball jersey with brown eyes and caramel hair like mine. I felt like I'd seen him before and then I remembered. But before I could saying anything he asked. "D-girl? Is it really you?"
"Gabe!" I exclaimed. And he pulled me into a hug. "Thanks for catching me, if you didn't that would've been very bad. Amused by what I said, he laughed. It was that laugh that always made me smile and laugh with him. So I did. Okay, now you may be wondering who into the world Gabe is. Don't worry, I'll explain. Me and Gabe go way back. His real name is Gabriel. But I call him Gabe and he calls me D-girl. We were friends in preschool, kindergarten and first grade. He was the best friend I ever had! But then something terrible happened. He got that call no one wants to get. His little brother was in the hospital. He had had cancer for a very long time. In fact, he had struggled with it for almost all of his life. I can't talk about it because it drives me to tears. Because of this, they decided to move away in order to escape all that had happened.
"I can't believe you're back after what happened," I said, instantly regretting it.
"After we moved, me and my family couldn't stop thinking about Jered." That was his little brother's name. "I realized I couldn't run from what already happened. Just this week, I finally convinced my family to come back. Jered would be proud." Tears started to collect in his eyes. "He really was the best brother I could have ever wanted."Tears started flowing down his face. I hated to see him like this. Why did I even say that! I'm so mad at my self.
"I'm so sorry Gabe. I shouldn't have have brought it up." I pulled him into a hug. We stood there like that for a while. Holding each other, silently, while I started to cry.
"It would have come up sooner or later," he said, breaking the silence. "I've missed you d-girl."
"I've missed you too," I said through tears. We still stood there hugging each other. Until he pulled away, and wiped his face with his jersey. I looked at him and he opened his mouth in shock. "Wait, are you, crying!" He has a right to be shocked, I rarely ever cry. My natural instinct is to fight, but death is not exactly something can be easily fought. I nodded my head and wiped away my tears. Once I stopped crying, which only took a few seconds I said, "I care a lot about you and hated to see you like that because of something I said."
"I care for you too. Thanks D-girl." I smiled. "Why don't we give each other our phone numbers so we never lose contact again."
"Good idea." So we did that and then to bell rang and recess was over.
"Why don't we go for ice cream at Dotty's after school, just you and me?" He asked.
"I don't know. I might be busy."
"Please?!?" He stuck out his bottom lip and gave me his pleading look that always made me laugh.
"Okay, okay... meet me at locker 202 and we'll walk there."
"Great!" He said. As we walked into school together, we walked by Lindsey, Susie, and Clarissa. They all gave me questioning looks. I smiled, and they smiled back and raised their eyebrows. I rolled my eyes. I'd have to explain to them that he wasn't my boyfriend. I don't think they'll believe me. Only Lindsey will believe me because she's met Gabe before. As I was walking, I looked behind and realized I had forgotten my lunch box.
I turned to Gabe and said, "Wait a second, I forgot my lunch box." He stopped walking and I ran back and grabbed it. When I looked up, I saw the crazy lady on a chair on one of the back porches of a house nearby.
"Have fun! And don't forget about the note." She yelled and disappeared in her cloud of black smoke. I instantly remembered the note. I reached into my pocket and once it reached the bottom, my heart rate started to quicken and I started to panic. For the note was nowhere to be seen. I stood there for a while until someone said, "You coming?" I turned around and realized it was Gabe.
"Yeah," I replied. And we walked inside. Wondering if I should explain to him about the crazy lady.
