This night was different. The air smelled like rain, and lightning reached down to touch the ground like a whip. I could hear my neighbor's slutty moans coming from her house, not at all quiet. I was cooped up reading a book, my bedroom window wide open because I hoped Gerard, for some reason, would come slip inside my window and just ask me to read to him, or perhaps to cuddle me. Either way, I hoped he would just come find me.
An hour later I checked the time, five minutes before midnight. I decided to go outside, in nothing more then sweatpants, not caring if anyone saw me. I was oddly relieved to find him sitting on a bench, gazing up at the- no, no wait, he was looking down at his lap, where his hands messed with the hem of his shirt.
"Gee," I breathed, not trusting myself to say anything else. Not after last night. "Hi."
"Frank!" He said, shooting up and pulling me into a hug. "I'm sorry about leaving like that and then not showing up for two days and then... kissing you..." He trailed off, dropping his arms and stepping away from me. "You shouldn't have wished that."
He knew?
"Wha-"
"Don't ask questions, Frank, pretend I didn't say anything, forget I know that," He rushed, looking up at the stars and mouthing 'help me.' I nodded at his words, seeing how I forgot I made that wish last night until he mentioned it.
"Alright," I confirmed, nodding a bit. He uttered a "thank you" and pulled me down to sit next to him on the damp grass.
"It's going to rain again tonight," He told me, smiling fondly up at the sky. He grabbed my hand and laced our fingers together, and I leaned my head on his shoulder, smiling up at the sky with him, although I could barely see the moon through all the black clouds, that appeared to be giant beasts. "They're friendly, they're just sad."
"What?"
"The clouds," He explained, looking over at me. "They're just sad."
"Why are they sad, Gee?" I asked him, like a small child would ask a question. Gerard just smiled wider, placing a kiss on my cheek.
"They know what's going to happen."
"Do you?"
"Of course I do."
"What's going to happen?" I asked again.
"That knowledge is not for you. You'll find out soon enough."
"Okay."
All was silent. The booming thunder shook the ground and our heartbeats were fast, our breathing ragged. But all was silent. My mind was silent and my heart was too, it wasn't telling me what to do for once. My eyes seemed to blur images together and the only thing that was truly in focus was him. His voice, smell, thoughts, absolutely everything about him was in focus.
His skin looked like it was made from the moon, his eyes looked like a universe all on their own, his pink lips looked like the sunset, and his hair seemed to be made of the shadows of night.
Gerard was truly beautiful.
"Do you still come out here every single night for me?" Gerard asked, for the second time since I'd met him.
"Mhm," I mused. "Although you make the night more interesting. I think, because of you, I am learning to like nighttime."
"Good. The stars seem pleased that they have grasped your attention like this. Remember the moon this time next year, thank her for everything she's given you," Gerard said, running his fingers through my mop of hair.
"What has she given me, Gee?"
"She's given you me. She took pity on you, Frankie, and here I am, I am her gift to you." I think on a subconscious level I knew he wasn't human, but I didn't care anymore.
"Tell her I said thank you," I murmured.
"But you cannot hold it against her, Frank."
"Hold what against her?"
"That knowledge is not for you. You'll find out soon enough," He said, for the second time this night. "As long as you keep making wishes on stars, everything will be okay, she'll remember you."
"She will?"
"When the time comes, she will."
