Chapter 26
The days were going by fast now- both Powers classes were fun, and Lena was learning a lot in History along with other classes. Control was still bad, but it hadn’t gotten worse. The main thing on Lena’s mind now was exams and her Calista and Quoim still being mad at each other.
Talla had forgiven Calista when she hadn’t gotten in trouble with Rhia, but Quoim still hadn’t forgiven her. Decia was now the problem. Decia was constantly chewing on things and shredding blankets. They’d had to replace five comforters in the past two weeks.
I might as well hope for a miracle. She thought glumly one afternoon after classes, watching Quoim and Calista fighting about Decia once again. Unfortunately, the only thing that seemed to perk Quoim up was thinking about Full Moon, and Calista still thought she was being medieval and too feminine, so this had to turn into a fight, too.
“I didn’t know you had a sister...” Lena had said a couple days after she met Nadine.
“Must’ve slipped my mi- Omygod!” After this interesting display of terror, Quoim had said, “She’s a Consul. And my sister... Ooooooooooh!” Quoim groaned, but Lena still didn’t get it.
“What?”
“God, Lena, don’t be so thick! If I have a fight with her-”
“You seem to be having one already-”
“Then she could give me detention for… ever! And I’m not having a fight with her, I’m having a fight with... her.”
“Oh, big difference. You’re not having a fight with her, you’re having a fight with her.” Lena retorted.
“Okay, fine. I’m not having a fight with her, I’m having a fight with that other one. Happy?”
Lena groaned, “You’re not having a fight with Nadine, you’re having a fight with Calista. Just say their names!”
“Lena, it’s her fault! I swear it’s her fault, it wasn’t my idea to go and stupidly-”
“I don’t care, I didn’t blame you, I’m just saying...”
“Well, if you’re going to pick on me pick on her too!”
“This her has a name, you know. Calista, remember? Your friend? And I’m not picking on you.”
“Number one, no, fine, Calista, but she’s not my friend anymore. And number two, you are definitely picking on me. Go away and bother Calista. I have homework to do anyways.” Quoim said, even though she knew that Lena knew she was done with her homework, and had been for a couple of hours.
“Whatever.” Lena walked away back to the dorm.
* * *
“It’s preposterous! Outrageous! How could they? I mean, yeah, maybe they need it, but still! Dump them on us? There’s got to be at least fifty THOUSAND other kids to do this to, and they choose... us?” Calista was screaming at the top of her lungs, and Quoim joined in, their anger at each other forgotten.
“This is so amazingly STUPID! I MEAN, IT’S ONE THING TO HAVE THEM EIGHT ROOMS DOWN FROM US, BUT I MEAN- OH MY FREAKING GOD I SWEAR, NO CLOSER THAN THAT!” Quoim started jumping up and down in rage, while Calista clutched the piece of paper so tight that it looked about to rip.
Only a few minutes ago, a piece of paper had passed through the enchanted door, bearing the message:
Dorm 759 residents:
Hoping that you are all well, there is something we must tell you. Half Moon is clearing out the dorm numbers from 760 to 900, and you are the last that will not be housing Full Moon students. Therefore, you have been selected to house the residents of dorm 767 in an upper part of dorm 759 that will be added on (the extra floor accessible through the normally sealed trapdoors will be opened). Your new upper roommates are the following: Ellevet Valgetine, Misha Grayle, Naran Menskive, and Rella Turnish. You will also be housing Naran Menskive’s Pixir, Raliyle, Ellevet Valgetine’s Frishe, Nagie, and possibly more Helpers to come. During the Friday schoolday, we will install the extra dorm. On Saturday they will move in, and will not move out until the day after Full Moon is gone. Thank you for helping create room for our Full Moon allies,
Evan Arach, Half Moon Headmistress
“This is by far, the worst. Day. Of. My. Whole. Fucking. LIFE!” Quoim let something out hidden between a growl, scream, and a sob, and then proceeded to throw herself onto her bed dramatically.
“It’s not... that bad?” Lena asked meekly.
Calista just turned to her, eyebrows raised, and said, “Oh, yeah, it’s not bad that our sworn enemies are going to be in the same room as us for a quarter of the year. No, this is so amazing I’ve always wanted this!”
“Well... does this mean that you two are going to make up?” Lena asked slowly, not letting her heart soar yet.
“Maybe.” Quoim muttered into her mattress.
Lena pulled on her cat pajama shorts and a long pink t-shirt that said ‘sweet dreams’ on the front in swirly letters.
“Come on, Let’s get to bed, it’s around eleven...” Lena said as she climbed into bed, feeling the weight of the blankets slowly settle on top of her.
