Now she had to face the cafeteria, lunch, where she didn't have anyone to sit with. Lena was already fantasizing about huge truckloads of Humans being brought to the school and being killed along with many other animals. As soon as Lena arrived at the swinging doors, she took a deep breath, ran her fingers through her hair, and let Phelicia perch up on her shoulder. Then, she pushed the dreaded doors open.
As soon as Lena walked in, people started whispering and pointing. Her cheeks reddened, but she just kept walking like she didn't notice. Lena got in line as soon as she could, it was normal Human food as far as she could tell with three choices: a hamburger with fries, a wrap, and a grilled cheese. Lena randomly grabbed a grilled cheese. Where to sit... Lena looked around the huge cafeteria, which was almost completely silent. It was obvious that everybody knew about her now, and anyone would love it for her to sit at their table.
Except Ellevet.
It was her first day here, and she didn't really know who were the bitches and who were the keepers. As her eyes surveyed the room, she decided that she would sit as far away from Ellevet as possible. That left her a little sliver of tables on the left side of the room, farthest from the doors. She decided not to sit with Serena or Rose, they were four years older, and in their sixth and second to final year. She was in her second year (well, first for her, but second in the school system), and that would just look weird.
All of the other tables were full of a bunch of different people, all at the same table according to their groups. One table had only one person sitting at it, however, a small girl with dark brown eyes and wavy shining black hair going down to her butt. She wore the standard black boots and short skirt with a tank top with thick straps in a plain light pink. She seemed to have a death grip on her cup as Lena made turned her gaze towards her.
There was only a murmur of talking now, all coming from Ellevet's table. All eyes were on Lena. She made her way over to the table with the girl sitting alone, feeling like a small, rare animal being tracked down, or a prize jewel everybody wanted. When she sat at the table the girl sitting alone.
"Oh my god, what a loser!" Lena heard Ellevet squeal.
"I know, right? I would never be caught dead over there." Another girl at her table added loudly. The majority of the girls in the cafeteria laughed and went back to talking about whatever they had been talking about before Lena came in.
For a few moments the girl just stared at her, as if afraid. Then, she seemed to snap out of it.
"Um... Are you sure you want to sit here? I mean, why aren't you sitting with Ellevet and everyone else popular? What I mean is, um, you don't have to sit with me, I don't have to be your charity case for the year..." She trailed off.
"Well, seeing as Ellevet thinks that I'm here to steal her popularity, I don't think that I'd be very welcome at that table."
"Oh." There was a silence at the table, and then she blurted out, "Is it true you're a Seer? I mean, you don't have to answer, um, yeah. Sorry I'm really awkward!"
"It's fine. I guess I'm a Seer, that's what everybody says, and I did have a vision..."
"That's why you got the Phoenix, you've got the best Power, like, ever! I'm Quoim, second daughter of the royal family. My family is descended from royalty, but we never really made it through with the riches." Her cheeks reddened and she ducked her head, and hastily continued, "I'm a Shadow Walker. Rare, yes. Cool name, yes. Important? No. Useful? NO. But a Seer, that's so awesome! I didn't get a Phoenix when I found my Power, but I did get something. Here, look," she pulled a necklace out from under her uniform. It had an oddly shaped pendent: an oval with ridges in it. Quoim muttered something to it and the pendent clicked open. Inside was a snake, curled up against the ridges, each coil exactly aligned with each ridge. "It's a snake that never grows, so I don't have to carry a huge pendent around my neck and cart it around on a truck. She could get huge, like thirty feet or something, but Madam Arach put a spell on her so she can stay this size. Her name is Slinth."
"Wow, that's so cool!!"
"Really?" Quoim eyed her doubtfully, "I think a Phoenix is better... Well, maybe not!" she added quickly as Slinth reared up, fangs out.
Lena liked this girl. She was funny and she seemed happy enough. She had let it slip that her family didn't have a lot of money, but that didn't bother Lena.
"Listen, what dorm are you in? I'm in number... number..." Lena fumbled around in her bag for her schedule, "Number 759. Dorm number 759."
"Really? Me too! And I'm the only one in there so far, I don't know who else they'll place in it but when they need the space they'll put a lot of people in there probably. But for now it's just the two of us!"
"Hey miss royalty," Ellevet sneered to Quoim, coming over to their table, "Sitting with miss celebrity, huh? Think that'll gain your family some money? You are so lame. Losers flocking together! How nice."
"Your table of attention seeking brats is on the other side of the lunch room. Anything else you need?" Lena retorted. Ellevet stood there for a few moments, thinking of a good insult.
"You think you're so special, huh? Madam Arach's favorite, the secret weapon, saviorof all Vampires. Well, you may think that you're all of those things, but I have many connections, you'd be surprised how fast I could turn everyone against you. I don't think you want to cross me, Kanstrofi."
"Well, I think that I already did Valgetine." Lena responded calmly, and Ellevet walked away, casting murderous glances over her shoulder as she went. As soon as Ellevet walked away, Lena turned to Quoim and said, "I don't like her much. And to think that I'm a half Vampire too... that must really get on her nerves."
"Like, she thinks that makes you better or something?" Quoim asked, getting the idea.
"Yeah. Something like that."
