Chapter 38- A letter

Eric's PoV:
After all the people get their trackers, I make my way up to my room to get changed. I walk up a few flights of chairs when I'm passing Max's apartment. I here shuffling. And a banging noise. I walk over and bang on the door. "Max max? You ok?" I shout and when I don't here a response I begin to walk away.

The door opens and a hand pulls me in. The room is dark. "Max, quit playin with me I had a shit day" I say smirking. The lights turn on and I see max sitting in a chair with his mouth taped shut and his arms and legs stuck with rope. I feel two arms grab me and force me onto a chair. I struggle but they manage to tie me down. I look back and see two sets of troops. One pulls out a phone. "We got em" they say and turn the phone off. They rib the tape of Max's mouth and he yelps. I look around frantically to see if anyone else is here. I try kicking around but that only earns me a punch in the stomach. The door of the apartment opens and I am shocked at who it is.

"Jeanine what are you doing!" Max almost shouts at her. "Well I was going to tell you about this months ago, but we need your faction as soldiers" she says calmly and my eyes widen. "I ain't doing that for shit!" I shout at her and she laughs. "Son....soon you'll do anything for me" she says and she laughs. "Never call me that! Ever. Again!!!!"I say and she just looks at me. "I am your mother" she says looking hurt. "If you look at it factually yeah you are my mother, but that doesn't mean you were a good one" I say and look away. "Boys get it over and done with" she says to her guards. "What are you doing to us?" Max asks. "Well if I'm going to use your faction as slaves well then I need you two to be on my side....which clearly you're not" she says. "And how do you expect to do all this?" I ask smirking. "Well you see, I have been inventing a new formula and it's finally finished. It is able to control someone's mind, make them do what you say." She says and I turn pale. She can do anything with that. Ro, what will happen to her??

One of the men hold down Max's neck and the other sticks a needle of blue syringe into his neck. They come over to me. I look at my mother "promise me something" I say and she looks at me. "You won't hurt my Ro" "oh honey, I won't, but you probably will" she says smiling innocently. The guards roughly grab my neck and the needle sticks in. The gaurds set us free from the ropes. There is no point in trying to hit any of them. We are defeated. "It won't set in until the morning. But when it does you will be meeting me here" she says and I walk out of the apartment. I can't see Ro.

I walk back up to my old apartment and bang the door in since I no longer have a key. I Take out my phone and see a few worried texts.

Eric seriously, you were meant to be home an hour ago.

I text back.

I hear a bing and it's a text back right away.

I put the phone into my pocket. She'll just think I'm drunk, won't think too much of it. But to me, that means that I got to tell her I loved her, possibly for the last time. It is the most important 'I love you' I have ever said to her.

I walk across the floor and sink into the sofa. I put my head in my hands. A tear falls from my eye and one tear turns into one hundred. Once I stop I know what I must do. I run over to my office and sit down. I pull out and piece of paper. I begin to write.

Dear Ro, if you are reading this it means that I didn't make it... I just want you to know I love you and I need you to know this. Jeanine injected me with a serum. I'm not able to control myself and I would've protected you if I could've. I love you rosanna pedrad. You made me a better person. You changed me. I have left another note, here's a hint.

Our special little place, the place you gave me trust.

I run back to our apartment and I place it on the table. I head to the special place I was talking about. I walk down to the chasm and through the secret passage, Ro cut a key for me. I walk up the steps and through the door. I sit down on the chair and look out off the balcony. I look away and begin to write my second letter.

Dear ro,
So you read my letter no.1 I want you to use this place as a hideaway from everything when you get home safe and sound. Just a place to relax, just like we did. Remember the first time we came up her together,good times.
I have one more letter and here is your hint.

I begin to walk to the train, passing our apartment as I go. I put my ear up against the door. She is on the phone. "He's fine sorry for startling you Four. I was just worried about him. He's out with a few friends." She says and my heart drops. "Look I'm going to run to the store. Tomorrow it's our 2 month anniversary. I'm going to make him a special dinner and everything. Bye" I run really fast, as fast as I can.

Tomorrow is our two month anniversary. How in two months could you love a person so much you are willing to die for them?

I leave the compound and get on the train. I go to the cliff and walk down the steps. I walk on the rocks up to the waterfall. I leave a final note. When I'm done I leave the box beside it and leave, not looking back. I know if I look back the memories will come. I can't handle them.

I get into the train and ride back to the compound, taking in every last peace of scenery. From the sunset orange sky to the long flowing green grass. Summer was quickly fading to autumn. You could feel it in the air.

I arrive at the compound and jump out. It's not the dauntless compound, but the erudite one. I walk towards the whet house I once called home, I know Jeanine is not home so I enter. I look into the living room to see rathy spread across the couch engulfed in a book. "Eric" she says in shock. She haven't seen me since I left, almost three years now. "Rathy I missed you so much!" I say walking over to her. I spin her around and look her in the eyes, going completely serious again. "I love you" I say. "I know" she says and I hold back the tears. The first time I see my sister in 3 years and I'm here to deliver bad news.

"Something bad is happening. I need to know you will be safe. Tomorrow morning your mother will be gone, go to the bunker under the house and don't come out until tomorrow. Or later. Bring plenty of food and water." I say before getting up and leaving. I can't even look at her. I know what I would see. A look of pure and utter terror on her face, something I could not handle right now.

I walk back to the train and get on. The sun is setting and it is becoming night. By the time I arrive in the compound it must be about 11:30. I just quietly head up to my old apartment and close the door. I sit on the couch. I try to stay awake but soon darkens engulfs me.
