We have been driving for five hours when we finally pull into an old parking lot in a small town. Alice parks the car turns off the ignition and looks at us, "So, you guys ready to meet your new home?" She asks.
Carson laughs. Burk sighs and looks at me. I don't seem to be the only one not suspicious about this. "Yeah. I guess. I mean are you sure we showed signs of rebellion? I mean what did Carson do?" But then I remember the year he didn't get his other half. The insults he threw at the System, the way he silently protested that entire year,
"Never Mind." The way his eyes dimmed, and then finally lit again on my birthday. A few days and they had kinda burnt out again. I think I am seeing that flame now. I hope he is happy. I want my family to be happy."Yeah, I thought so." Alice replies more to Carson then to me. She blushes.
As we get out of the car thunder rumbles above us. I didn't think it was supposed to storm today. Burk seems to question the thunder too. He puts his arm around me, "Was it supposed to storm today?" I shake my head and look at Alice.
"We should get under. We don't need to be stuck in the fog storms." Under? Fog storms?
Carson turns to Alice, "Under where? And what are fog storms?" Alice turns serious and a little frantic.
She talks fast, "Okay so, the rebellion group is under ground. Follow me." She waves us over in a rushed motion. We all comply.
"Fog?" I ask reminding her we don't know what it means.
"Oh. Um, the fog storms are located on the easy part of the System. Only Ina few towns. We think they are manufactured by the System, anyway, they have blinding fog and rain. And if you get caught in the fog it can suffocate you, it is very thick." She again motions for us to follow and starts running, her army colored outfit becoming a blur. He black boots clacking.
I am the first to follow her. The boys follow close behind me, our same old System clothes a blur in the parking lot. Alice stops at a small drain cap and lifts up. "Please get in and hurry!" At first I don't know why she is so worried, but when I look back the fog is about ten feet from us and the rain has started. Carson jumps in and Burk is right on his feet. I look at Alice and she nods, noticing the confusion in my eyes. Why would the System want to make a fog that could kill someone?
I jump into the drain and Alice slips in closing the door just in time. The drain is a lot bigger than I had thought it was. It is a gray hallway that is dimly lit with lights lining the ceiling. Alice leads us down the tunnel and into a small door. She opens it and we are greeted with a buzz of conversations. The room in front of me is filled with people, dressed in whatever clothes there are. Not all System approved. Soon all of the heads are turned to us and the chatter has dulled to a stop.
"Hey! Over here!" Alice calls. "These are the three new rebels, welcome them!" Everybody cheers. I have no idea what is happening. Quieter now Alice says, "Come on, we can go get you guys bunk rooms." She leads us through the room of people, some clap us on the back while others say hi. "Okay," Alice says, "this is the main room, we have meals and meetings here. Sorry it's so loud!" She smiles at me and I smile back.
Alice opens another door and then we are in a quiet hallway, "This is the bunk hallway, as of now we have like 12 rooms open and we are planning to add more, but we have to share rooms still. Sorry again, I will explain everything tomorrow." We all say it's fine. And follow her to one of the rooms. "So," she smirks a little at me and Burk, "I'm guessing you two love birds want a room together." I laugh.
Burk smiles and looks at me, "I would love that." I blush a lot. And at this moment I wish I could run into his arms. But I hold off. Alice shows us into the room and tells us where the bathroom is, "Thanks." Burk says.
I hug Alice, "I missed you." I whisper.
"I missed you too, Ands."
I walk into the room and then head back out, "I am going to go to the bathroom," I tell Burk.
"Okay, I'll be here."
"No kidding." I laugh.
I walk to the bathroom and wash my face. I look in the mirror and and just stare at myself. Am I really a rebel now? Did the System really make that fog? Gosh! I have so many questions. I walk out of the bathroom.
I find myself walking towards Carson and Alice's room. I want to ask Alice some questions. I tap the door and then open it and peek in. I half smile and half look astonished at what I see: Carson and Alice are Ina full on kiss. Carson has his hands on Alice's back and her hands are in his hair. My astonishment subsides, and I smile.
My questions can wait.
