Breathing heavily, I stood there and stared at the ground below, rain falling so hard past my eyes I could barely see.
The feeling of reality and what I'd done was coming back to me. I was Jesse. The geeky girl turned new hero.. and now turned murderer. I'd actually killed him.
I was used to killing mobs but not used to killing humans. This was new, totally new.
But regardless of what I'd done, he still deserved it. An eye for an eye, as Ivor would've said.
From behind me, Reginald cleared his throat.
Shit.
I'd forgotten about him for a moment.
He'd seen me murder Aiden.
I turned around and looked at him. He stared at me "Jesse.. what've you done.."
What did he think I did, pushed him over for fun?
"You know what I did"
He went to speak but stopped himself. He probably had no idea what to say. To be honest, I didn't either.
I looked behind him to the palace. Despite Aiden's death, plenty more deaths were happening inside. I had to go and get the others.
I bent down and put the enchanted flint and steel back in my pocket, as Reginald held the chicken.
"We gotta go back and help the others. Right?"
I asked. I emphasised the right to ensure that it was all we were going to do. No telling everyone on what he saw, just focusing on helping the people.
He nodded.
We quickly ran back into the palace and out onto the other side.
The mobs were still causing mayhem everywhere, people were still screaming and guards were still fighting. In the town square, a ghast blew up the floor and a waterfall had been made. That's how we'd escape! That's how everyone would escape.
Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted Petra and Ivor fighting zombies. Running straight over to them, I managed to attack the zombies from behind and kill them.
So much killing.
Petra's eyes widened "Jesse! You alright?"
"Did you get the Eversource?" Ivor asked.
I nodded "Yeah" I reached into my pocket and pulled out the Flint and Steel "And this too"
"Excellent!" Ivor grinned.
I didn't smile back.
Nothing about this situation was excellent. Petra noticed my discomfort and frowned "Where's Aiden?"
"He..."What could I say?
Would Reginald spill the beans?
Would he back me up if I went rogue?
What would he do?I turned behind to Reginald who looked at me with an awkward yet horrified sense in his eyes. Turning back around, as stiffly as I could, I said
"Aiden fell off the edge. He didn't make it"
Petra gasped.
As I spoke, I heard a scream of no from behind me. Maya and Gil had been tied up by some guards. They actually looked devastated.
Crap.
I didn't think they had hearts.
But from the look on their faces, they did care. In the midst of the rain, I'm sure she was crying.
I'd murdered their friend.
I turned back to Petra after a moment and looked at her. I didn't want to lie to her about this. Apart from Olivia, she was the only real person who I shared things with. I mean not only was she the only one to know about my sexuality, but she knew my background, she knew my life. At least she knows what I know.
Thanks to Isa, that was a whole other can of worms that had been opened. Even my name was a lie.
So why shouldn't the rest of my life be the same?
Shaking the thoughts of my head, I pointed to the waterfall "We gotta go down there. That's how Isa, Lukas and I survived. Cause theres a massive lake below "
Ivor nodded "Yes. But how do you persuade all of them that?" He pointed to the citizens "All they've ever known is a life up here. They think the Founders dead"
Petra agreed "I hate to admit it, but Ivor's right."
Quickly thinking, I ran up to the edge of where the waterfall started. It was a long drop, but we couldn't stay here.
From behind me, Milo appeared "Jesse! Are you alright?!?!"
"Yeah. But everyone has to go down this waterfall. Before this place gets destroyed!" I shouted loudly.
People around watched me, terrified.
Now I'd played the villain, it was time to be the hero
"Your Founder is not dead! Okay, she is on the ground as is my friend. But if you wanna survive, you have to go down here!"
I looked around. A random citizen shouted.
"Why should we trust you?!"
Another one replied "Yeah, you're a criminal!"
They really weren't gonna believe me.
Milo suddenly stepped in the water beside me on the left.. and Reginald did on the right.
"We have to believe Jesse! We can trust her, I promise!" Milo yelled.
"She saved my life! She can save us all.." Reginald looked at me, hopefully. He wanted me to redeem myself.
Petra and Ivor stepped into the water. Petra yelled "Listen to them! She's gonna save us. Right Jesse?"
I nodded, gritting my teeth with the lies I was about to announce
"I can save you all. Just follow me."
With numerous looks and stares, the citizens began to pile into the water.
It was time.
Holding onto the flint and steel, I began to let myself slip down the waterfall.
Then got faster.
And faster.
And then we were on the edge.
"Woa-oooooaaaah!"
I yelled as we went over the edge. Others followed suit and screamed as they went down.
The drop down felt like 30 seconds of spiralling hell.
I couldn't see.
I couldn't think.
I couldn't do anything but scream as others did before me.
Then...
Land was seen. Eventually, through the rain.
Right before th-omph!
Blackness.
