"Thanks for inviting me over. I gotta go."
"Bye!" They said as I left. I ran to the beach ready to swim. I took off my jean shorts and my Simply Southern mermaid t-shirt. My sapphire blue bikini matched my toe nail polish. I dove into the waves and swam. I swam farther from shore until I made it to a cave. I got out of the water and walked into this big empty room. It had purple marbled walls and engravings. There was an opening at the top. I read some of the writings in my head. One I read out loud.
"Monica was a mermaid beautiful and fare. Everyone admired her until she went from there. She stole the queens crown and power too. She didn't know what to do. Not soon after the queen discovered what she had done. She was band from the sea or where she's from. Her fins turned to feet land she must stay. Evil she became until one fateful day. A powerful mermaid poisoned her. She abused and kidnapped a mermaid and knew something for sure. A gem could make her a mermaid again. She could finally get her revenge. But when she died she was pushed aside until the next eclipse. When she should rise again beware her evil tricks."
"That was........interesting." I mumbled to myself. A beautifully written engraving caught my eye. I read it aloud.
"I wish I may I wish to be a mermaid that lives in land and sea"
My legs suddenly started to burn. I collapsed onto the stone ground and screamed in agony. My bones cracked and shifted. It felt like my feet were extending and my legs mended together. My bathing suit ripped. After five minutes the pain just stopped. I sat up and instead of my legs I had a long turquoise tail. I just screamed. After 10 solid minutes of screaming my throat was dead. I dove into the water and swam back to the beach. My legs appeared and I quickly slipped on my shorts. I walked back to my house when Ariel grabbed me.
"You know I didn't picture you as a mermaid." She said raising an eyebrow and smiling at me.
"It's complicated."
"That cave right. Probably should have warned you not to read anything out loud. Also don't worry I'm one too. I can help you and whatnot."
"Please!!" I exclaimed.
"Oh and by the way it only destroys your pants the first time."
"Wait how long have you been one?"
"152 years probably." I stared at her wide eyed. Not to much later she realized what she had said.
"I was born in 1851. So was Daniel. He's a merman."
"You mean I'm gonna be that old!"
"No because the mer council stopped it and there was a glitch so I went from 17 to 15 and so did Daniel but from 18 but in 3 months and 7 months we start aging normally. It's hard to explain." She rambled on.
"So I age normally."
"Yep."
"Thank god." I said. We walked and I ran back to my house in my shorts. I got some underwear and took of my bathing suit top. I put on the same shirt and my flip flops. I walked out of my house and saw a girl with long red hair smile at me. It wasn't a good smile but more of a sinister grin. Did I know her? I shrugged it off.
"So where'd you come from?"
"Florida. How many things have you experienced here."
"The civil war, mer hunters, you know, same old things."
"Do they even have a school here?"
"Yeah. It's small though."
"Go figure." I said. After a bit of silence I finally said something.
"Do you have any mermaid friends?"
"Yeah but I only hang out with really Sharon. Daniel is half mer obviously." We continued talking and walking for about an hour. I saw that same girl I saw earlier. Her red hair was in a braid and down to knee. She had violet eyes and pale skin. She looked quite odd. We continued walking down the street.
"Do you know her?" I asked Ariel.
"My dear god she's back."
"Who?"
"Monica."
"Who's that."
"Evil mermaid thing. She was killed though."
"Hey random question. There isn't an eclipse coming up any time soon, is there?" I asked sheepishly. She stared at me. Not the good stare though. More of a deathly glare.
"What did you do!" She yelled.
"I may or may not have read something in a cave."
"Come on!" She said grabbing me. I could already tell this won't end well.
