dr. fitzgerald was a good man, he had been chums with luna's father and she knew he was an extraordinary doctor that knew what he was talking about. and he was never one to beat around the bush, that wasn't his style and luna appreciated that.
"i'm very tired." is all luna could say because, oh, was she tired. luna was very much tired of all the drugs and experiments and her sickness in general.
luna was denying the treatment. no more chemo, no more radiation, nothing. she was done.
"you know this will cut your life expectancy---"
"i'm well aware." luna didn't care, she stopped caring quite some time ago. frankly she felt she had no reason to continue torturing the people around her. even as luna thought of luke and nearly changed her mind -selfishly she wanted to fight if only to continue catching glimpses of the boy- she knew if this is what she wanted she had to stay away. she didn't want to become more attached to luke than she was. nor did she want luke to become attached to her.
she had only just met calum that day and his interest in her was made beyond clear; he wasn't as sly as he liked to believe. calum was someone luna would adore to befriend had she not been faced with a life threatening illness.
in the end she knew what needed to be done, with or without parental approval.
luna couldn't keep prolonging inevitability, so she sat while dr. fitzgerald yammered on about the outcome of ceasing treatment. although, the only thing on luna's mind was a set of cobalt eyes and her inability to be perfect for him.

him
luke wasn't sure what he had done, or if perhaps luna simply preferred calum. all he was sure of were the insecurities he had battled most of his life were tearing him apart. luke wanted to be enough for luna, he desired her approval above anyone else's no matter how wrong it sounded.
they had known one another for a fraction of a second and luke already felt the desperate desire to spend every moment of every day with the strange dark eyed girl. but somewhere, in the back of his mind, chimed a little voice growing louder with every mile put between his car and the doctor's office, whispering that luna would never want a nobody like him.
