Aly’s POV

We arrived at the school hall, and the committee had done an amazing job with it all. Honestly, for something we all secretly thought they’d stuff up, this is pretty amazing. There was no set theme per se, but there was an atmosphere about it all that sorta said ‘Moving forward.’

There were helium balloons everywhere, all pastel, along with streamers hanging from door-frames, swooping up to the middle of the room that met at the scoreboard usually used for games played in here. Sparkly glitter was scattered around the room, covering the slick floorboards. Along the side there was a beverage table, seniors who had volunteered standing behind it and talking amongst themselves absentmindedly. On the other side, there was a DJ who was blasting some of the latest songs everyone was currently obsessed with. It was dark, smokey, with lights emanating from the table he was set up at lighting up the shiny floor.

In my peripheral, I noticed Hayley and Liam loosely holding hands and half smiled to myself about it. It was about time something happened with those two! I turned to Nate. “This is gonna be a great night! Look at everything, it’s beautiful!”

He responded with “Yeah, just like you.” He tapped my nose and gave me a cheesy smile, knowing I’d tease him for using something so cliché later. Laughing, I dragged him onto the dance floor as I found my hips swaying to the beat.

We spent a large portion of the night dancing or getting drinks, so it was only until about halfway through that Hayley and I could excuse ourselves to talk or have a break. We both went to the bathroom on “secret women's business”, Nate commenting on never understanding why girls always travelled to the bathroom in “packs”. I laughed, the boy didn’t even know the half of it!

We were fixing ourselves in the mirror when I turned to Hayley and said “Sooo… even though Noah didn’t show you… you seem to be having a pretty decent night with Liam there? Getting a bit close I noticed… hmm?” I winked at her and laughed.

She hit my shoulder playfully, still laughing with me “I actually have no idea what’s even going on tonight. He’s been really cuddly and stuff and has been getting really close to me - I don’t know if I want that though!”

I tried as best I could to hide the grimace I could feel surfacing as I answered, as lightly as I could “Well have you ever considered it before tonight? Or tonight even?”

She paused. “… I’ve thought about it yeah but not like, seriously. I mean Liam is one of my best friends and I never really let myself think about him that way, you know?”

“But what if something happened, would you stop it? Or what?”

“But Aly nothing would.”

“But what if it did?”

“What if’s are stupid!”

“They’re realistic dammit now answer the question Hayley!”

She sighed, a half smile playing on her lips. “I mean I guess I would maybe just let it be and let whatever happens happen… but saying it and doing it are two different things. I mean, I don’t know, Aly. We’ll just have to see I guess…”

Liam’s POV

And so Nate and I were left alone for the moment while Aly and Hayley apparently had to “really use the bathroom.”

Okay guys, okay.

“So, you having a good time with Hayley? I saw you guys getting a bit close there.” Nate said, shooting me a knowing look and smirking at me.
