Chapter 18:

Jake's POV

***

Kyle's fist came clashing into my jaw. It wasn't that bad of a punch, but it still knocked the wind out of me. I stumbled a step backward from the force and shock.

Kayla's voice filled the room, "What the hell Kyle!"

He just shrugged and said, "He deserved it." Before walking out of her room.

She came rushing over to me and examined my face. "Oh my god! Are you okay? Are you bleeding? Lose a tooth?"

I let out a small laugh at her over protectiveness, "I'm fine. I could use some ice though."

We headed down to the kitchen and I watched for any sign of Kyle, but it was all clear. What did he mean by "I deserved it"? Did I do something to him that I wasn't aware of?

Kayla grabbed a cold pack from the freezer and handed it to me. I gave her a small smile as to say "thanks" and put it against my jaw. There will probably be a bruise there now, great.

"So what Kyle said before, you know about how you deserved it? What did he mean? Kayla asked.

I shrugged, "I really don't know what I did. I was hoping you would know."

She shook her head, "Not a clue."

After a minute of silence I set down the ice pack and turned to Kayla. "I think there was something going on before we got rudely interrupted?"

She smiled and walked closer to me. Her arms went around my neck and she looked up at me with this look in her eyes. It was new, it was interesting, but it was indescribable, and I loved it. Her eyes kind of gave off a glint to them now that I think about it.

Instead of me kissing her, she actually kissed me. My lips met hers and my hands went on her hips. This feeling of bliss and excitement filled me. I've been waiting so long for her and now I have her. She's not officially mine though.

I wanted to make it official, to ask her, but I didn't pull away. Not for another minute anyways.

My hands cupped her face and I asked, "Kayla, will you be my girlfriend?"

The wonderful look in her eyes vanished, it was replaced by a cold hard look. All her emotions were being blocked off and bottled up. She didn't respond and I started to worry, I thought I had her.

"Kay, what's stopping you from saying anything?" I asked. I searched every detail of her face looking for an answer, but nothing was there.

She put her hands over mine and brought them in between the two of us. "Jake, I'm really sorry, but no."

"But why? Why did you kiss me? You said you had feelings for me, but why can't you say yes?"

"Yes, I do have feelings," she confirmed, "but I can't be your girlfriend. And I'm not going to do the friends with benefits either, so we have to be just friends again okay?"

I had her, I had her for a few minutes, but now she's gone again. I guess the lesson is to cherish what you have, because you won't have it forever. The thing that's really bugging me though is why?

The moment the words left my mouth I regretted them so much, but it's true, I can't. It pained me to see the look on his face, he probably hates me. The scene keeps replaying in my head and it won't stop. I just wish it would've been different, then I could say yes.
