JAKES POV

RECAP---
She came crashing down and I caught her bridal style. "That was amazing." I said quietly.

Looking up into my eyes she said, "Thank you. Your a great base."

I smiled at her and I just couldn't take it anymore. That's when I--

That's when I threw her into the cool ocean water.

"Jacob Miller!" She screamed when she resurfaced, "I'm going to get you back for this!"

I shook my head in amusement. "In your dreams babe." That's when she started to run at me. I stayed put knowing she couldn't pull me into the water based on her smaller figure.

What I didn't except was her to jump up and give me a bear hug causing the freezing water to soak me. "Wow, that waters really cold!"

"Well now you know how I feel." Kayla retorted.

Holding her legs in place around me, I ran over to the water and took her down with me. We were already soaked anyways whats the difference?

We sat in the shallow part of the water in silence until Kayla spoke up, "Jake, were you going to kiss me?"

"When?" I asked turning to face her.

She rolled her eyes because she knew that I knew what she was talking about, but she responded anyways. "Like 5 minutes ago. Before you threw me in the water."

"Well..." I trailed off not knowing what to say.

Was I going to?

"Jake, can I have a word with you after class?" Mrs. Potts asked. Of course I responded with a yes and went up to her desk when the lesson ended.

Everyone got their writing project but me, and to be honest, I was terrified that I made the wrong decision. "You wanted to see me?" I asked trying to hide the worried tone in my voice.

"Yes, about your project," She walked over to the other side of the room and brought back my folder. I focused on the click of her heels to ease my nerves. "It was very outside of the box, not what I was excepting or looking for at all."

My heart dropped at her words, I didn't like where this was going. It was worth 50% of my grade, but that wasn't even the important part.

Opening the folder she pulled out my dozens of papers. "And I absolutely loved it. Every bit of it. You have talent, thats for sure."

Every feeling of doubt I had before disappeared. This was better then a good grade on it, her words actually meant something.

Mrs. Potts handed me back the folder wearing the cheery smile she always had. "Good job, I'll see you tomorrow."

"Thank you, it means a lot."

Kayla's POV

I waited impatiently outside of Mrs. Potts room. I wanted to know about what she wanted to talk about with Jake.

After a good five minutes, he came out with a huge grin on his face. Not his smirk, but an actual smile.

"What's got you so happy?" I asked falling into step with him.

He remained silent and handed me a blue folder with the words 'Creative Writing Project by Jake Miller.' I've wondered what it was before, but he wouldn't tell me.

The curiosity was eating me alive, I just had to look. Opening it I saw about a dozen pieces of notebook paper. Pulling the first one out I saw the big red A at the top corner, it must've been good.

Skimming through the paper I noticed it wasn't a story, or even complete sentences. How would this get an A? Looking it over again and seeing the same lines repeat I finally noticed what it was.

All 12 pages were different lyrics to songs, that he wrote.

"What flavor?" Jake asked.

"Seriously?" I asked, "Obviously chocolate."

The worker handed us two chocolate ice cream cones in exchange for Jake's 5 dollar bill.

Holding up the cone I said, "To Jake's good grade and success!"

He laughed, but held his up too. "You got an A too."

"It's different though," I took a lick of the soft served ice cream, "Your's actually means something. I just wrote about a memory."

He simply shrugged his shoulders and headed towards the door. "Where are you going?" I asked.

"You need a tour of the town still don't you?"

I nodded and joined him out of the ice cream parlor. We walked the streets while Jake pointed out important place that were well known such as a county library and many pizza shops.

We were about to cross the intersection, but the light turned green causing the cars to go. I reached over and pressed the cross walk button.

"Hey! Jake!" I called out.

He turned around. "Whats up?"

I pointed to the post on the cross walk pole. "You have to enter this contest!"

The poster said:

Sign up now for Battle of The Bands! Submit all entries of your song by Friday, May 15th.

The grand prize is $35,000 to make a music video with your song.

"Jake you have to do it! Your a shoe-in for first place. It would be stupid to not do it." The traffic light had turned back to red allowing us to walk, but I ignored it and stayed by the poster.

He study the poster for a moment before replying, "You really think so?"

"I know so! Come on even your teacher thinks your work is great. Do it Jake!"

He looked at me suspiciously like he was looking for a sign of me lying. "Fine, I'll do it. But I'm not gonna win."

I rolled my eyes and started walking forward. Right away I was yanked away by Jake and heard a car horn.

"Better watch where your going Kayla." He smirked still having an arm around my waist.

Spinning around, I went on my tip toes so I was level with his cheek. I pecked his cheek and smirked, "Better watch where your going, Jake."

Jake's POV

Kayla twisted around and stood on her tip toes. Quickly placing her lips on my cheek she said, "better watch where your going, Jake." And then walked across the cross walk.

What's that supposed to mean?

My smirk was back as I jogged to catch up with her. I grabbed her hand and laced our fingers together.

Her gaze went down to our connected hands and then back up to my face. Before she could react I took my thumb and lightly rubbed circles over the back of her hand.

It was only for a second but I could feel her squeeze my hand in surprise.

Two can play it this game.
