Ted Talks
Chapter 15
Lily's POV
I'm downing drink after drink while complaining to Linus, who's surprisingly a really good listener. I say that because not many people these days are. A stressed looking Ted comes running through the restaurant and plops down next to me at the bar. He looks like he hasn't slept in days. The bags under his eyes are heavy and dark purple.
"Ted what's wrong? You look like a wreck." He sighs. "That's because I am Lily. There's something really important that I need to tell someone. Just one person. It's eating me alive." I grab a hold of his hand and squeeze it gently. "Whatever it is Ted, you can tell me. I promise I won't tell anyone." "Alright. Here it goes." He takes a shaky breath. "I'm moving to Chicago." Shock flows through me. "Why?" He looks at the ground before looking up at me and realize why instantly. "You're still in love with Robin aren't you?" He nods. "I'm truly happy for Barney and Robin, but I just can't be around after they get married. It'd be too hard for me. If I stay, I'll never be able to get over her."
"I understand Ted. I'm disappointed and sad that you're leaving, but you have to do what's best for you. Though I do have to ask, are there any other reasons besides that?" He nods again. "There's one other reason, that reason being that I'm tired of being the only single one in the group. You and Marshall and Robin and Barney are so happy together and experiencing what I've been waiting patiently for years. I'm well past 30. I want to meet the love of my life, live in a nice house, and raise a family. I've looked high and low in New York and haven't found her. I figure that maybe in a new city, I'll have a fresh start and a better chance of finding her. Don't I deserve that?"
"Of course you do. Though you have to tell Marshall, Robin, and Barney. It's only fair that they know. Monday's only a few days away. It'll be here before we know it. Marshall won't be here for a couple days. I can handle telling him, but you need to sit down with Robin and Barney as soon as possible and be honest." "You're right Lily. Barney wants to talk to me later anyway so I'll just ask if Robin can come along too so we can all talk." He gets up and hugs me. "Thank you Lily for not judging me. I just hope you know that the distance isn't going to affect our friendship in anyway. I'll be back to visit when I can and you're welcome anytime to visit me in Chicago." I hug him back and tell him "I know."
I watch Ted leave my side and walk off to gather himself. He bumps into a pole, groans, and continues to head into the distance. I wish him the best of luck because I know tonight's talk isn't going to be easy for him, but he's brave to say what he's going to say.
