She Didn't Make It

Chapter 29

Barney's POV

  Five years later...

It's been a rough few weeks for the gang, especially for Ted. Tracy's been in the hospital for several weeks. She's had a medical history of several serious illnesses. Well a few weeks back, she got really sick fast and was rushed to the hospital. It took the doctors a couple days to figure out that she had kidney failure. I'm using past tense because unfortunately about an hour ago, Tracy passed away, leaving behind Ted and their two children. He's been staring blankly at her limp and pale body still lying in her hospital bed. We gently try to get him to leave the room with us, but he refuses to budge. Robin volunteers to get a nurse to help us out. One comes in immediately. Ted and her go at subtly for a few before he finally leaves the room with us.

Everyone gets into Lily's van and we head back to Ted's apartment to make sure Ted doesn't try to bring harm upon himself and/or lose it. No one should be alone when their significant other dies. Tracy was the love of his life and it's an absolutely shame that she got so sick and passed away. We'll all miss her. She brought an extra light to the group I was always to stubborn to mention. I wish I had told her more often how highly we valued her and loved her company.

   Ten minutes later...

We get back to Ted's place where we find his mother watching his kids. The kids jumps into Ted's arms, nearly knocking the wind out of him. Ted tries his best to hold himself together, but his mother can see right through him. She leads Ted outside onto the porch where they can talk in private.

   Ted's POV

My mom pulled me outside to find out what was wrong. I make sure no one else is watching before I allow myself to break down. "Tracy passed away today. She got kidney failure a few weeks ago. They performed several surgeries and treatment plans on her, but nothing worked. Her kidneys then began to fail. I mean I guess I saw it coming a few days ago, but that doesn't make it easier. I don't know what I'm going to tell the kids. Me telling them that their mother is never going to walk through the door again is going to shatter them. Plus, they're just kids. Penny is 10 and Luke is 11. It's so crucial for kids that age to have both of their parents around."

My mom pats my back and wipes my tears away. "Listen Ted, there is no easy way to break this news. I wish there was, but there isn't sadly. I'll help you them okay?" I nod my head. I take a deep breath and we head back inside. I watch her take Penny and Luke by the hand. I join her side. I bend down and look them right in the eyes. "Listen guys, there's something I have to tell you about your mom. You know how she was sick when visited her in the hospital?" They nod. "Well your mom got even sicker and she's not coming home." Penny begins to cry while Luke asks if we can say goodbye to her as a family. "Yes we can. Do you want to go right now?" Penny and Luke both say yes. My mom comes with us and the gang says they'll stay at my place and watch the kids for me when I get back so I can some time for myself.

 15 minutes later...

We get the hospital and head to morgue. That's where they're keeping Tracy's body for the next few days until we have the funeral. I'm going to make the arrangements first thing tomorrow. The kids go into shock when they see how pale she is. We all say our goodbyes one by one. Before leaving, I make sure to kiss my wife one last time. I let the kiss linger for a minute before pulling myself away. As soon as I get home, it hits me that today was the last time I'd ever kiss my wife.
