"Let shadows die so I can feel alive.  The church of lies can't tell me what is right.  Our little victories and desires won't live on.  Let shadows die so I can feel alive, I feel alive." ~ Shadows Die

*Katrina's POV*

"Red alert, I repeat, red alert," I called into the radio as Jinxx and I ran down the street towards the gunshots and screams.  Someone was here and they weren't friendly.

I had my bow in hand, a sleek black arrow nocked with a knife at my side.  Jinxx, his war paint covering his eyes and bandana covering his face, had his rifle drawn, the star etched into the side.  In all our time there, we hadn't had anyone in the city.  Whoever this was probably wasn't here by coincidence.

"Location?" The radio crackled back.  It sounded like Gerard, but I was too busy focusing on making it to the source that I wasn't paying attention.

"South side.  Gunshots and screams.  Not friendly.  Requesting immediate back up, over," I gasped, ducking into an alleyway with Jinxx.

"Copy that.  Do not engage, over."

"Copy."

I then silenced the radio, clipping it to my side.  Jinxx and I slowed to a fast walk, slinking through the shadows like we'd been trained.  We were close.

We made it to the abandoned town center, a place where there had probably once been festivals and farmers markets, but now it lie soulless, dark bricks that hadn't been stepped on in months and cobwebs occupying the windows of the shops.  We stopped in an alley, hearing loud voices coming from the shadows.  Jinxx put a finger to where his lips hid behind the black bandana, motioning to be silent.

"Move," a harsh voice barked from across the center.  We watched as a small group of black clad teenager were shoved into the moonlight, wrists tied behind their backs.  A group of men in police uniform followed, guns drawn and shoved them into kneeling positions.  Another policeman carried a body and dropped it roughly beside the group of teens.  One of the girls whimpered.

"Where were you headed?" The lead officer questioned sinisterly.

"N-nowhere," one of the teens, a black and red haired boy, answered.

"Uh-huh.  Looks to me like you were heading to the rebels.  That's treason."

"N-no!" One of the girls protested, her red hair shimmering as she shook her head.

"Do you know what the punishment is for treason?" The officer asked.  I glanced at Jinxx beside me in the shadows.  He had the same concerned look in his blue eyes.  If they were going to be executed, we had to step in.  Screw our orders.

"Please don't," the other boy pleaded.  "We won't run again.  We'll go back to the city.  Please."

"The punishment is death."

I fingered the string on my bow, readying myself to intervene.  I watched Jinxx in the corner of my eye, flipping the safety off of his rifle.  We were ready.

"Please-"

"You know," the officer interrupted, "you had to have known where you were going.  Where are the rebel scum?"

The group shook their heads.  "We d-don't know."

"Too bad."  The officer raised his gun, pointing it at the redhead's forehead.  I drew my bow.  "Funny though," he said.  "You led us right to them."

I couldn't believe my ears as I watched the gun raise in our direction.  I was frozen, shocked.  I heard the echo of a gun shot, my world slowing to a near stop.  But instead of feeling the bullet hit me, I instead found myself watching the officer fall to the ground in a cry of pain.  And then the world sped up again, the sound of gunshots and defiant cries across the city tearing through the night as I felt Jinxx grab my arm and pull me behind cover.
