"This is New Years Day- so rise from the ashes. Faith will find a way- like lightning crashes. We'll keep marching on and on and on." ~ New Years Day

*Katrina's POV*

I awoke in a comfortable bed. I didn't know where I was at; all I remembered was Andy holding me while I cried in the backseat of the car. I must've fallen asleep.

I opened my eyes to see a white ceiling and a spinning fan. I laid there and stared at it for a few minutes, thinking over everything that happened yesterday. What am I going to do? I got expelled from school and I have no diploma for college. My apartment is gone along with everything I owned other than my pajamas that I was wearing, my hoodie, iPhone and iPod. I even lost my car because it had been parked under the overhang that collapsed in the fire. No way in hell was my insurance going to pay for any of it; I had really crappy insurance. The band was nice enough to let me come here last night, but they're going to be leaving for LA again. I have nowhere to go.

I thought to Alee. I could try to ask her, but she didn't live in town anymore.  She too was in LA for school.  I had nobody here to turn to.

*Flashback*

I woke to the sound of alarms and the choking smell of smoke. It took me several seconds to realize what was happening; there was a fire.

I immediately sat up and looked around. I didn't see the fire, but I swear I could feel the heat from the blaze. I sprung from my bed and ran to the bedroom door. I opened it to see exactly what I hoped I wouldn't; my apartment was on fire already. I could feel the fire shaking the floor beneath me and the heat seemed enough to scorch my skin. I flung the door shut. My head was buzzing with questions and panicked thoughts, blood pumping with adrenaline and making my heart go faster than I ever thought possible. I did the first thing that came to mind; I grabbed my phone and iPod and threw on some shoes, not even paying attention to which ones they were.

I ran to my window, only then realizing that the fire escape was at the window in the living room, the very room that was already ablaze. Just great. Without any more thought as to how I'd get down, I opened my window and climbed out onto the ledge.

I was greeted by the cold wind and sound of sirens. I looked down and remembered that it was a three story drop onto asphalt. Turning around, I saw flames licking my closed door, making the white door turn brown and black. I didn't have much time.

I noticed a fire engine pull up and I began to wave my arms around, trying to catch the attention of the firefighters, hoping they could get me down. As they exited the vehicle, one of them noticed me and shouted something to another. In response, they grabbed a ladder off the side of the engine and jogged to below my spot on the ledge. They extended the ladder and placed it against the building beside the ledge. One of them stayed below and held the ladder while the other one climbed up to get me.

When the firefighter reached me, he told me that he was going to put me over his shoulder while he climbed down. I didn't understand why I couldn't just climb down on my own, but I didn't question it. I was probably some safety regulation, in case I collapsed or something.

As we descended, I looked up to my window and saw embers and flames emitting from my room. I turned away, letting the tears run down my face. When we reached the ground, I barely noticed as the firefighters lead me to an ambulance to be checked for injuries or head trauma. As the EMT shined lights in my eyes and checked my pulse, I tried my hardest not to sob. I watched as, despite the attempts of the firefighters, the complex was engulfed in the blaze. I watched the overhang that my car was under collapse in a mix of ash, embers and flames.
