I don’t know anything they’re talking about, I can barely speak properly and they think I’ll be able to understand Shakespeare? My mind’s in a blur, and I just want this to end.

Love

Love

A four letter word

That means many things

Things no one understands

People say they love

But that’s all a lie

Because they don’t get it

They say ‘Love’

And you trust them

With a piece of your heart

And then they destroy it

Destroy every last speck

Of your hope

Before you know it

Your life is crushed

Because of that four letter word

Love, like poison off of the tongue

No one gets it

But they all know how to destroy you with it.

The words are scribbled across my paper, and I didn’t realize I wrote it. A tear falls onto the page. I learned that the boy I met earlier’s name is Elliot, and that we have English together. He’s sitting beside me and when he notices me crying he looks onto my page. His eyes scan the words I wrote, but the teacher yells at him so he looks away.

“Okay class so you all have homework!” She says giddily. “This is that you have to write a poem about a subject of your choice. You all have to read it in front of the class, and it’s due tomorrow.” The class moans. Finally the bell rings and she dismisses us.

I get out of the school as fast as possible and find Nathan surrounded by the girls who beat me up in the bathroom today. I hide my face and try to walk away but Nathan spots me and calls me over. “Can we just go home?” I mumble. He notices my black eye.

“What happened to your eye?” I look at the girls and they all give me death glares, so I lie.

“I just ran into a door. You know, being the klutz I am.” He gives me a look saying that this conversation isn’t over. “Anyway, I have homework so we really should be going.” I get into his car and he soon follows me in.

“What was that about?” He asks me as he drives.

“What was what about?” I start twiddling my thumbs.

“You know you can trust me right?” He says after a long period of silence.

“No I can’t. I even called you today because you said I could but then you just hung up on me. You’re the one that forced me into this, and you don’t even care.” We get to our apartment and I run up to my room and immediately start working on my poem.

“So class, I hope you all completed your homework and are ready to present it today.” Well, I finished it, but I definitely do not want to read it. She starts calling people’s name that then stand up, read their poems, and sit back down. They’re all pointless and have no feeling or emotion. “Ariana Faire,” I slowly walk to the front of the class. “So, what’s your poem called?”

“I Trusted You.” I say shyly. She nods for me to start and the words start pouring out of my mouth.

“I hear the floor creek
