"Wait- so you're telling me that what you said in that dream was true? I really am a demigod? I have powers and stuff?" Shawn said after Melanie and I had finished explaining to him that he was a demigod. For the third time. We both nodded.
"Well it's a little more complex than just having cool powers, but yeah. Pretty much." Melanie said.
"Well I want to be prepared for stuff now that I know, so explain the complex parts of it to me please." he said.
"Well have you ever seen any out-of-normal things? Like things that shouldn't be possible?" I asked him.
"You mean like getting an A on my math exam?" he joked.
We stayed very serious and it make him look a little nervous. "No. Things like a man with only one eye. Or a man that's half horse. That kind of stuff." Melanie said.
He gulped and nodded. "One time I saw a kid that was half goat or something leading these two kids around Manhattan when I went to visit my grandma who lives there. I didn't say anything about it at the time because I thought I was just imagining it, or that kid had pants that were really weird. That's the only thing like that I've ever seen."
I sighed. "You were lucky you've never seen a monster. Or had an encounter with one. I used to see them all the time until this girl gave me a favor she owed me." I gestured to Melanie, who was looking away.
"Yeah, whatever. I only did that because I owed you." she mumbled. "I would've been fine without you butting in."
"Sure you would've." I said.
Shawn was looking at us confused. "Who did what now? And what monsters? Like the things in horror movies?"
I sighed. "One day I was walking down the street and I heard a growl from the woods. I knew it could be a monster, so I followed where I had heard it from. I saw Melanie being attacked by what looked like a manticore. She was losing the fight. So I went to help her, and eventually we won. After that she owed me. So to repay me for that, she put an enchantment on my house that keeps the monsters away from it."
"You see, monsters are the things like giants and if you know anything about Greek mythology, then you should know about some of them. Like the Nemean lion that Hercules slayed once. When you're a demigod, they're kind of a bad thing. For demigods like us, they come after us so they can eat us. And you're in even more danger of them now." Melanie explained and his face turned a bit pale because of the last part. "Once you know and are aware that you are a demigod, it makes your 'scent' stronger, which makes them appear to you more. Also, cell phones are bad. They're like a flare to signal to all the monsters that you're there."
Once she said that, he got up, went to my window, and threw his phone out of the window. "Ok so no more of that."
We laughed a little. "Yeah."
"Ok, so monsters are bad, phones are bad, knowing too much is bad, and I have a question." He said, repeating what we had told him.
"Yes?" we said at the same time.
"Who are you guys's godly parents?"
Melanie said hers. "Hectate. Goddess of magic."
"Ares. God of war." I said proudly. "And I've come up with three possibilities for who yours could be."
"Cool! And I think I've already figured out who mine is but go ahead." he smiled at us.
"Athena, Persephone, and Demeter." I said.
"Demeter. I figured it out when you explained to me what a demigod was. For the second time." he scratched behind his neck.
I thought it over. It made a lot of sense. And I was right about it! Sort of. But still! Melanie looked like she agreed too.
"It's a good fit for you. But we can't know for sure until you get claimed." she said, resting her elbows on her lap and putting her head in her hands like she was bored.
"What's it mean to get claimed?" he asked looking at her.
"You have a symbol appear glowing above your head, telling you which god is your parent basically. Then you know for sure which one it actually is." she replied.
"When did yours first appear?" he asked.
"It's weird. It happened when I was in the woods in New York around the time I was thirteen. And Eclipse's happened when she was near some strawberry farm in New York." we exchanged thinking glances.
We all thought for a minute about that. Before, I had thought it was just a coincidence that both of us had been claimed in around the same area. But I should have known that there are no coincidences in a demigod's life. With the info from Shawn that the only place he had ever seen anything impossible to the mortal world was in Manhattan, and that's around where we were when we were claimed, then there's something going on in New York.
"So what's going on with that lady made of dirt?" Melanie broke the silence. We made a silent agreement not to talk about what's going in New York yet.
They both looked at me. They thought I knew something about her based on how she talked to me in the nightmare. "Well that's Gaea, in other words, the earth itself." Shawn gasped but didn't say anything. "If you're wondering what she wants from us, we have to kill seven people that she hates. If we don't, then she kills the ones we love. If we accomplish it, then nothing happens. We can go along with our lives knowing we've killed seven people."
"Sounds like fun. Can't wait." Melanie said sarcastically.
"Yeah. But how are we supposed to kill them?" Shawn said quietly, obviously nervous and scared about the idea of killing someone.
"It's obvious. We use our demigod power to kill them." I said.
"The tone of your voice doesn't match the situation, Eclipse." Melanie said defensively.
"Sorry, it's just that I've known about this for a few weeks now. I'm kinda used to the idea by now."
"So how do we use our power? I just found out about this, literally not even twenty-four hours ago. I have no clue how to even use my power, let alone kill someone with it." Shawn said.
"Don't worry, we'll teach you." I said, getting up.
I acted cool about all of this because I've known about it for a while, but the thought of killing someone unnerved me. Especially since I've already taken someone's life before.
