CHAPTER SEVEN
Elayna
I woke up to the squeals and shrieks of my two best friends and Hannah gossiping about last night’s party from Hannah’s bed. I knew Hannah would fit in perfectly into our little trio. I rubbed the sleep from my eyes and wondered about how the hell I was going to cope with parties, work and early morning classes. Right when the feeling of worry was beginning to settle in Faith threw a stuffed teddy bear at me which earned her a glare. What? I never claimed to be a morning person.
“What was that for Fay?” I said, my tone implying that her name was a synonym for something bad.
“Jheez good morning to you too sweetie pie,” she joked before adding, “The R.A, I didn’t catch her name, wants to see you. She came knocking about half an hour ago.”
“Shit, why didn’t you guys wake me up?” I screamed I knew there were going to be times when I would be short on rent money and I did not need my R.A. hating on me.
“We did!” Selena screamed back throwing a pair of sweatpants and my most comfortable The Simpsons hoodie at me, “Get dressed, hurry up! We’ll get breakfast once you’re done with that,” she said, gesturing to the direction of the door at the last part.
I mumbled some cuss words that I had learnt in AP French from the hot Canadian transfer student we had in our French class back in high school. Gosh feels like forever ago and not just 3-4 measly months.
Satisfied that I would not be bringing my pissed-off early morning energy with me into the R.A’s room, I knocked the typical polite three bang knock and waited for our R.A to open the door. After a few seconds I heard some shuffling and the door flew open.
“Hi, can I help you?” The girl that answered the door asked.
“Hey,” I replied awkwardly I hadn’t expected her to be so loud and cheery this early in the morning, “I’m Elayna, my roommate told me that you were looking for me this morning.”
At the mention of my name her face fell and she frowned slightly, moving slightly so I could get into her room. "Is everything o.k.?" I questioned her as I walked into her room, taking in her rigid stance and her facial expression I could tell I didn't want to hear what she had to tell me.
"Sweetie there's no easy way of saying this so I'm just going to say it outright," she paused to look at me with regretful eyes, "Your check for the compulsory first three months' rent bounced.” Instantly my heart fell; it must have been clearly projected onto my face as she rushed to add, “Now, I spoke to my supervisor, I didn't name you of course, I have no choice but to give you a seven day notice to pay the amount in full and if you don't you'll be asked to move out but my supervisor has allowed for me to give you an extra three weeks after the initial seven days to come up with the money before we terminate your student halls contract."
I was trying to look at our R.A, whose name I was assuming to be Kate as that is what it said on her door, but I just couldn't see her as my vision got blurred by my unshed tears. Choking back the sob that was threatening to leave my throat I looked at Kate, seeing what must have looked like the most pitiful questioning look that I was giving her as I was clearing my throat, Kate hurriedly added, "as you know the annual total is $10,000, but with the first payment you'll be paying for three months rent, as well as the deposit of $500 so you need a total of about $1330 handed to the housing department within a month."
