Chapter Eight
ADAM
I clenched and unclenched my hand as I waited for her to turn around. How can she look like she’s going to fight that guy one second, then be hugging him the next? At first I thought he was her boyfriend, but the way he looked at her, when he stood next her at our table made me dismiss that thought almost instantly. It was as though they were old friends or something. Family even.
Whatever they were it pissed me off greatly that he thought he could stand there and square up to such a tiny girl, which is why I stood up and stalked towards them, ignoring the questions of my friends and the girls. Over my dead body was he going to lay a finger on Elayna.
As soon as I got close enough to hear what they were saying, me and that guy locked eyes and he dropped his fighter stance to hug her. I looked at him like he was crazy before he left. What was that all about? I stood there for a while before realising that she must not know that I was behind her, so I cleared my throat.
“Hold your horses,” She said as she finally turned around. Her eyes were redder and puffier than earlier, I don’t know what upset her before and I didn’t get the chance to find out as that jackass came over and dragged her away. All I knew was that he had made a crappy day even worse for her.
I took one finally look at her and decided that I needed to go and find that guy. You can’t just square up to girl like that, boxer or not she’s still a girl.
“Where’d you think you’re going?” She asked me her voice still hoarse from the crying she’d just been doing. I didn’t understand why seeing her so upset unsettled me so much, but I didn’t care enough to dwell on it. All I wanted right there and then was to piss that guy off half as much as he did me.
“To find that douche bag that so very clearly upset you,” I said as though it was the most obvious thing in the world.
“Who?” She asked genuinely confused stopping me in my tracks. I turned around to look at her to see if she was serious, “Shit you mean Matty?” she asked pointing to direction in which he had left.
“Yeah Matty,” I said mimicking her voice. She rolled her eyes and scoffed at my immaturity.
“Matty would never hurt me Adam,” She said as if almost willing me to believe her and understand but I didn’t, so I questioned her further.
“Why? And how can you be so sure? From where I was standing it looked like you two were squaring off, literally,” I was annoyed and I hadn’t realised that I had closed off the space between us so much so that there was barely a foot separating us.
“He’s married to my cousin. She’s practically like a sister to me and he’s like a brother. They used to come to our High School. You might remember them, Matthew Stevens and Chelsea Maynard?”
“That guy that used to box and his girlfriend? Weren’t they three or four years older than us?”
“Yep that’s them,” she replied popping her ‘p’, “and she is three years older than us and him four.” She started smiling at the thought of them which just confused me further.
“I know that you’re here on a boxing scholarship and all. But what the hell were you thinking squaring up to Matt?”
“I told you,” she said sounding exasperated, “Matty would never hurt me. If anything I would’ve hurt him.” I scoffed at her ego. Boxer or not, biology is biology and facts are facts. He is a male and he has so much in size and experience on her, she’s got to be kidding. Hurt him? Is she serious? My thoughts must have played out on my face as she began to explain what she meant.
