CHAPTER SIXTEEN

ADAM

She was humming along to the song that was playing, smiling absentmindedly at her waffles, while cutting them all into small shapes before eating them.

She couldn’t have looked more beautiful if she had tried. She looked so flawless because she was smiling again.

I swear I was quickly beginning to love that smile of hers; it had this tendency to make a room light up with its sincerity and contagiousness.

I pressed my lips together as I thought about what had just happened. It bothered me greatly that she had gotten so upset about talking about her parents but I was glad that she felt like she could tell me. I hated seeing her so saddened and broken, but everything she’d told me helped me understand Elayna Maynard more. Why she distanced herself from people and kept those close to her at an arm’s length.

“Hey,” she said quietly as she brushed her thumb over my lips, “No frowning allowed for the rest of the day,” I chuckled as I pulled her closer to me.

“Then why are you doing it?” I asked her teasingly.

“I am not,” she denied. Damn I wanted to kiss her pouting lips, know what she would taste like, but I knew I couldn’t do that since I didn’t want her to think that this was all based on a physical whim.

“If you say so,” I replied with an eye roll instead, “So what do you wanna do next?” I added.

“I really don’t mind, but listen can I ask you something?” I nodded my head, urging her to go on, “I’m usually a pretty blunt person, I don’t see why that should have to change now,” she glanced away from me for a second before returning her gaze to me and asking, “I’m not some kind of rebound chick to you, am I?”

I almost laughed at how opposite from a rebound she was, however when everything that she’d said clicked into place it quickly sobered me up. Rebounding from whom?

“You’re nowhere near a rebound girl for me, anyway who would I be rebounding from?” I asked her genuinely curious.

“Barbie.”

Now I did laugh, Alexis was more like a rebound from Puffin rather than the contrary being true, “It’s not funny, Adam. I saw you together last night and like I said, I don’t do casual,” she said putting one of her fingers up, “And I’m not going to be your rebound,” she finished as she put a second finger up.

“Well, then it’s a good thing that you aren’t either to me then huh?” I whispered to her our noses touching and our lips a breath apart. Her breathing hitched and I smiled at the affect I was having on her.

At least I knew this thing wasn’t one sided.

“Good,” was all she managed to get out as she fought of a grin, just as my pocket started to vibrate. I moved away from her, pulling it out of my pocket I looked at my phone’s screen, it was a text from Skylar.

Dude I just got off the phone with Ma, she’s making me bring a barbeque grill back with me >=/. Like we don’t have enough stuff, LOL. Anyway, keep Wednesday night free, we’re going to have a barbeque =).

Pulling my other arm away from her so I could text him back quicker I asked, “You’re not working on Wednesday night right?”

“I get off at four, why?” She enquired.
