CHAPTER TWENTY ONE
ELAYNA
I woke up with my hands clenched tightly into a ball and my hair matted by sweat to my forehead, my breathing laboured I looked around the room in confusion when my eyes finally focused on a concerned looking Adam looking down at me while stroking my cheek soothingly.
“Puffin?” He asked his voice husky with sleep.
“Where is she?” I asked him as I craned my neck up to look around the room, my eyes were darting around when I quickly realised that it was just a dream, an incredibly lucid dream, but a non-existent reality nonetheless. Groaning I plopped back down on the pillow, embarrassed by my outburst I felt my cheeks heat up, “It was just a dream,” I muttered.
“Yeah it was,” Adam confirmed, “Want to talk about it?” He asked; yet there was clear apprehension in his voice that told me he wasn’t telling me something.
“What is it?” I asked him, dread suddenly began to spread through me, “What did I say in my sleep?”
“Nothing,” he replied nonchalantly not meeting my eyes.
“You’re lying to me,” I stated, “What did I say?” I asked him again.
“It wasn’t very clear but you were mumbling something, I think you were talking to your Mom.”
“About?”
“Like I said it wasn’t very clear, Puffin,” he restated, “But you told her that you were better than that and that she doesn’t frighten you anymore,” he finished looking me straight in the eyes.
“Shit,” I muttered as I plopped back down onto my pillow. I covered my face with my hands, that I had just realised were shaking; I squeezed my eyes shut as I tried my hardest to keep my tears from leaking out of them. I hadn’t had a nightmare like this ever since I’d moved away from home to college. Sure, I had unpleasant dreams, but I woke up before Hannah did or I would wake up and go back to a dreamless sleep if it was too early to get up.
What upset me the most though was not that the nightmares had come back; it was that ever since I had moved in with Adam they had completely left me. I was at utter ease.
I swear for a sheer moment I was at peace.
I guess they really meant it when they said that all good things must always come to an end. I felt myself shrinking back into that place of helplessness when suddenly Adam picked me up, bridal style, off the bed.
“Let’s go and get us some breakfast,” he said as he opened the door, “You don’t have to tell me about it this minute but I’m not gonna watch you get depressed right in front of my very eyes either,” his deep gruff voice whispered to me.
“Okay,” was all I could muster as I wiped my face dry while using every ounce of my self-control to not ogle at Adam’s bare, chiselled and muscular chest. I chanced a peek at him in all his athleticism-oozing glory, when I heard Skylar clear his throat. Adam’s chest vibrated with his silent chuckle as I covered my face with my hands in embarrassment for the second time that morning.
“Shut up. Leave me alone,” I said my voice sounding muffled through my hands as Adam put me down on the couch.
“You are too cute,” Adam said as he pressed his lips to mine as soon as I lowered my hands from my face taking me by surprise, before turning around and walking towards Skylar, “Are we good?” He asked him as he stretched out his hand to him.
