CHAPTER TWENTY TWO

ADAM

I looked down at Puffin, with her curvaceous sleeping form tucked under my arm and her arms wrapped around me. I chuckled silently at her attempt at keeping either of us on our own sides of the bed with her ingenious blanket wall idea. I couldn’t understand why she insisted on always folding that thing up and putting it between us when both of us breach the rules of the blanket.

Every single night so far.

“What are you laughing at?” She asked me out of the blue her voice slurred by sleep. Glancing down at her I tightened my grip around her as I tried to keep the sheepish grin, which was making its way across my face, at bay.

“How’d you know I was even laughing?” I asked her, my own voice deep and groggy but the amusement in it clearly evident.

“I can feel your chest vibrating with your laughter,” she complained as she looked over at the time on my alarm clock, “Seriously? It’s only eight o’clock. This is my day off, doll,” she complained as she turned around and buried her face in my chest. As bold and upfront as Elayna usually was, I didn’t think she was aware of what she was doing; which only served to make her seem even more adorable to me. Glimpsing at her pouting face, I frowned slightly at the small cut that was still visible on her lip and the small scab remaining on her brow bone. I hated to see her hurt but I knew that small scabs and cuts didn’t bring much pain with them.

Regardless, she still looked beautiful and breathtaking to me; little cuts and all.

“Alright, baby,” I whispered, “You go back to sleep for a few more hours than we’ll get ready and help with the barbeque prep later,” I added as I tried to stifle a yawn; I sent a silent thank-you to Skylar’s Mom for insisting on buying us dark curtains for the windows as there was barely any light seeping through the drapes.

Already half asleep, Puffin hummed her agreement. With the sound of her steady deep breathing filling up the room, it wasn’t long before I found myself drowsing off and giving in to the sleep that was lulling me back to its peaceful darkness.

“Are you guys decent?” Skylar hollered through the closed bedroom door just as Puffin and I were stirring in the bed sheets, trying to prolong the whole fully-awakening-ourselves thing. As you do.

“What?” Elayna groggily replied. I peeled my eyes open to glance at the time on my alarm clock only for my eyes to open wide in surprise; it was already one in the afternoon.

“Puffin,” I said as I lightly shook her, “Elayna, we need to get up. It’s already one in the afternoon and we haven’t even got the steaks and burgers for the barbeque yet,” I added. She bolted up when she heard what time it was, only for her to get a head rush from the speed in which she sat up in, groaning Elayna put her head in her hands.

“So, you are not decent then,” Skylar complained through the closed door much to my amusement and Elayna’s mortification.

“We are decent,” Elayna insisted as she took her head out of her hands, “Come in.” Skylar slowly opened the door; making a big deal out of the fact that he was being so cautionary about it all.
