The next Monday, I cheerfully went to school… of course, with Nick and Laura. It was Monday, so my class really wasn’t that early, but I went off with Nick and Laura so I’d have the time to see Alex. I wanted to push it after all.
“Why doesn’t your boyfriend pick you up to school instead of me?” I asked Laura while we were heading for our lockers… as usual.
“Oh, come on, Liyah. His class starts too early. I can’t wake up by that time.” She said.
“You guys are getting serious, actually.” Nick said.
“Anything wrong with that?” Laura threw it back to Nick.
“No.” he laughed. “It’s not like you to take a relationship seriously.”
“I know.” She said. “I actually like him a lot… more than my past fuck partners.”
“You should’ve seen them, Liyah, last Friday.” Nick told me.
“Why? Did they have sex?”
“No!” Nick laughed. Honestly, I was surprised. Laura usually goes for sex at those kinds of small parties. Nick continued, “They were having conversations!”
“Wow.” I said. “Laura overcame her urge to have sex? What is this? Opposite day?”
“I don’t know why you guys are surprised about all this.” She chuckled. “I just wanted to take him slowly. There’s more to him than his outside appeal, you know.”
“Yeah… The organs.” I teased her.
“Oh, shut up, you two.” She said. “Just because you two are broken up doesn’t mean you should take out all your free time on my private sex life.”
“Private sex life?” I laughed. “Knowing you, it’s not private. You’d have sex in public.”
Suddenly, a guy came up from out front and greeted us. It was Alex, holding a Tupperware. “Hi, Liyah! Alex and Laura, hi!” he said.
“Speaking of private sex life.” Laura said to me while I was still surprised and overwhelmed to have seen him. “There you go.”
“Hi, Alex!” I tried to sound more cheerful. Alex smiled at me as I could see Nick watching us closely. “How’s it going?”
“So, Liyah, I wanted to talk to you.” He said, and I blushed. I thought it was something serious or private or erotic.
“Fantastic.” I said. “What is it about?”
“We should probably go.” Nick pulled Laura away with him. They walked past me and Alex. I didn’t even notice. “See you later, Liyah.”
“Well, I was trying to race some funds for Sharon. I was selling these brownies.” He meant the Tupperware he was holding. “I’m trying to sell one for 60 cents. I thought you’d care to buy one.”
“Oh!” I reacted. That was really sweet for him start something like that on his own. Where did he get the confidence? He was really amazing. “That’s really nice, what you’re doing. I want to help out.”
