It was a few more days before graduation. June 16th was a Thursday, and everyone was so busy with all our final exams. Others were also busy with their college applications, but not me. I was planning on stopping for about a year and work before I enter Berkeley. Delaying didn’t really matter. All I needed was Alex’s support. Speaking of Alex, he hadn’t broken up with Winnie that time because he told me it was really hard to break up with her. Well, he had a point. If he was to break up with Winnie all because of me, it wouldn’t feel right. He told me he just needed time to plan about it, and it was okay by me, so he stayed to be her boyfriend for some time. It was okay. Alex didn’t really have sex or kiss with her anyway. I see them around at school together, but Alex always seemed like he wanted to break free from her. Well, I felt sorry for him, but sooner or later, he was going to be free from her, so it was really fine by me. All I needed was patience.
Anyway, our graduation was on the 21st of June, so I really was running out of time. Alex still didn’t know what words to put up or how to break up with Winnie. The two of them got along too well that it was very hard to get them to fight. Of course, I felt threatened. Every day that I had to wait was another day that I felt more distant from Alex, but it was all okay since Alex texted me a lot. Of course, we never really show or let anybody notice that we like each other since Alex was still with Winnie. I just had to bear along with the few days that we had.
That Thursday, at June 16th, Laura and I hung out right after our finals were finished. We were both happy that the painful days of exams were finally over, and we could finally have fun with the coming summer break. So, we both went to our lockers, finally fixing our things up since would be leaving school in a few days.
“Hey, Liyah.” Laura started talking to me as we were taking our stuff off our lockers, and I listened to her. “Isn’t it a little sad? I mean, our senior year was the best ever, and it’s almost over in a few days.”
“What are you whining about? It’s not like we’re going to different colleges. You and Harvey are going to Berkeley with me, remember?” I said as I continued to drag my stuff into my bag. Some didn’t fit, so I decided I would just carry them when we leave.
“It’s not that.” She stopped taking her stuff off and faced me. Of course, I did, too. “I mean, this place is full of memories. Aren’t you going to miss it?”
“For my four years of stay here, I didn’t really make much friends.”
“So, you’re not gonna miss this place?” Laura sounded a bit different than usual. She really sounded like she grew fond of Neptune High. “I’ll sure miss it a lot.”
“I won’t miss the place.” I continued picking up books from my locker until all that was left of my locker was the teddy bear that Alex gave me. I stared at it and smiled for a moment. That I LOVE YOU print on the heart of the bear made my heart melt again. I closed my eyes, and I’d suddenly get flashbacks of Alex… the way he smiled… the way he looked at me… the way he kissed me. All those were all special memories to me. So, Neptune High isn’t really what I’d miss. “If I was talking about the place alone, I wouldn’t miss it. But it’s the people that I’ll miss the most. I grew to love you all. Of course, I’ll miss you all.”
“Wow.” She laughed. “I’ve never heard you say something like that. Or could it be that you’re talking about Nick?”
“I’m not.” I haven’t seen or talked to Nick for a few weeks. It was like he stopped being my friend, but it’s not like it really mattered to me. “I haven’t even seen or spoken to him for quite q while now.”
“What’s the deal with you two anyway? Is that the reason why you cried in the ladies’ room that one time?”
“It’s not about Nick, okay? And I told you I’d never tell you about that time.” I pulled out the teddy bear off my locker and placed it above all the books I carried.
“What’s with the stuffed toy by the way? Did your dad give it to you?” Laura asked. Jeez, she just wouldn’t stop asking.
“I suppose you could say that.” I started walking since I gathered all my stuff.
“Hey! Wait for me!” Laura rushed to get all her stuff off her locker.
“Well, hurry up, will ‘ya? It’s because you talked too much that you’re so slow!”
“Here, here!” Laura finished getting all her stuff and carried them as she ran to overtake me.
“Hey, Laura and Liyah!” Harvey came up from behind us and stopped Laura from running. He took the books off her hands and carried them himself. “I’ll take these.”
“Thanks!” Laura held his other hand as they walked together with me.
“So, what’s the plan?” I walked with them. “You guys gonna get laid tonight?”
“Actually, we’re supposed to go to dinner with you guys.” Harvey said.
“You guys? Who’re they?” I said.
“You know, the guys. You, Samuel, Jason, Nick... Maybe we could invite Sander and Winnie, too.”
“Are you sure that’s a good idea?” I wasn’t too sure if my presence around Alex and Winnie would be okay. Harvey knew about my feelings for Alex, so I knew he could figure out what I wanted.
“It’s gonna be fun!” Harvey insisted. “I’m sure we’ll all have a good time.”
“I’m not really sure about this.” I said.
“It sounds fun actually.” Laura started to skip around. She was lucky to not be worrying about anything, but I was a little nervous of what might happen if Laura, Harvey, Winnie, Alex, Nick, and I would all be around on the same table.
“Come on, Liyah! It’ll be fun! You could get laid!” Harvey teased. Suddenly, it hit me. I didn’t know why. He said I would have gotten laid. I was sure he didn’t mean Nick because Harvey knew exactly that I had feelings for Alex, so I was hoping that Harvey meant that I would get laid with Alex, and it all urged me. Suddenly, I wanted to come and kiss Alex out of the blue, disregarding what Winnie might think. So, I decided.
“All right, fine.” I stopped walking with them, and they listened to me. “Only if you tag along Alex and his girlfriend.”
“Okay. I’ll ask them, then.” Harvey smiled at me. It felt like he was plotting something, but it didn’t really matter. If he wanted to pair me up with Alex, then I was up for it! “I’ll call them. They’re probably not busy, so expect them unless they have a different place to be going to.”
