Too Close

I sat in the big office off of the main entry with leather gloves fitted to my hands and a bag of ice held to my bruised eye. Isabelle sat behind her grand oak desk and my father leaned against the edge, far too anxious to hear the story I had to tell.

And so, I began. I started from the very moment at the school where the demon had bitten me too the dream I had at Simon's including ever dream, ever speck of detail to my uncles dreams, and then my mother warning me not an hour ago in the infirmary. I could see my father tense at just the mention of my mother every time I spoke of her.

At the end both were drained of color and myself out of breathe. A weight had been lifted off my chest, but the feeling of eyes watching me grew more intense.

Isabelle spoke first,"If this is all true, Sebastian has returned and all, the Clave...."

"The Clave won't help us, Iz." My father stood facing away from us.

"Jace, Sebastian's return could mean the end. No matter what you say, the Clave will hear of this!"

"And then what?" He spun to look at us,"The Clave will only slow us down."

"Jace, you need to think about this....lives will be lost if we go in there alone. I won't risk the safety...."

"Safety? You're worried about people's safety now?" He pushed hair from his face,"What about Clary's safety? What about all the other people he's probably torturing?" he paused and pointed at me,"What about Cecily's safety? He's out there Isabelle and if we don't destroy him while he's weak, he will kill everyone and take her. Then where will we be? Tell me, because I think we'll be in hell."

She looked at him sternly,"Jace, the Clave will be called and this matter will be put into their hands as well as the matter of Cecily, that is final." He folded his arms and I watched as he watched her every move. Her blue eyes followed him and flicked to me.

"As for you Cecily, do not take off those gloves for the safety of everyone here as well as yourself, hear me?"

I nodded, those were rules I wanted to follow.

"Good, you may go. Dinner is being served in the dinning hall."

I took this as a dismissal and walked from the office only to trash the ice bag on my way out. Shadowhunter's mingled outside in the entry way, all their eyes on me. Stephanie will spread rumors, I just need to keep the glowing a secret as best as possible.

Dashing up to my room, I found a simple long sleeved navy blue shirt and a black scarf as well as a new pair of dark blue jeans. I just needed to blend into the crowd of Shadowhunters and get back up here. Slipping the black leather gloves onto my hands, I position my hair so the loose waves covered part way of the bruise.

Too bad, slipping in and out unnoticed was difficult as hell. Going down the stairs was fine as was going through the entry hall, but one step into the dinning pavilion and the room fell completely silent. You could hear a pin drop in that room, as I walked over to the buffet line. Placing the chicken and salad on my plate whispers passed down the tables. Stephanie had twisted the truth to sound as though I had attacked her and given me the black eye in self defense.

Nasty glares were thrown my way and how I only wished, Andrea were here. She's at the hands of your uncle. One false move and she dies like the rest of them.
