We hadn't walked too far before I saw the familiar surroundings of the dinning room, where Shadowhunters varying in age milled about. Sebastian forced his way through, Carter trailing behind him as he gripped my arm. Somewhere between the stairs and ground level the guards left my mother making us cling desperately to one another. I could feel her bones under the dirty rags she wore and her red hair stood vibrant around her pale skin. Those jade green eyes watched Sebastian like a hawk watching it's prey.
Once deep enough into the crowd, I wrapped my arm around her shoulders to lean to her ear,"I'm going to get us out of here....I promise, okay?"
My mother instantly shook her head,"No. You need to flee here, Cecily. You get any opportunity to leave this place you take it, hear me? Don't wait for me, i need you to get far away from here and don't come back."
"I came to save you, and that's what I'm going to do." I watched as people seemed to swoon at the sight of their ruler and his son.
"Cecily, please don't be so stubborn, please..."
I looked at her sharply our jade green eyes meeting. "You can say please all you want mom, I'm your daughter do you seriously think I'm going to leave you in this hell hole?"
Her face contorted,"Cecily..."
I jerked forward, to loosen my grip on my mother and hold her hand tightly. Carter dragged me to be inches from his face as he studied me.
"Going to hit me again?" I snarled as his eyebrows furrowed together. "You wouldn't do that in front of your beloved cult though, would yo...."
My words were cut short as I had realized we stood at the front of crowd on a small stage like area. All eyes were on us as Carter pulled me to his chest and tangled his hands in my hair. His lips crashed to mine in a disgusting heat.
Cheers roared in my ear as Shadowhunters seemed to love our fake love and when he pulled away he whispered,"I'm sorry my love."
I took an immediate step back as I felt my mother being torn from me. Two guards hauled her to the side of the stage and as I was about to start toward her I saw on the other side of the stage a young girl draped lifelessly between two guards as well.
"Andrea?" She didn't even stir at the mention of her name. "Andrea!"
Guards materialized next to me, clawing at my arms they began to drag me toward the side of the stage where a post with cuffs waited. Thrashing, I cursed loudly seeing Carter stare at the scene unfolding in front of him. The guards won slamming my face into the pole making me face sideways to the crowd.
The cuffs dug painfully into my wrists as I struggled against them, but Sebastian's voice overpowered my noise as he preached to his followers. "My allies! We stand in the wake of the very creature who let us have life over thousands of year ago. This creature watches our very actions through every rune we possess upon our skin!" He paused, "However, this creature destroys us with the rules of the Clave." Comments of resentment spread through the crowd, agreeing with my twisted uncle.
I pulled on the cuffs, getting to my knees and pulling with all my power to release them. It made the post vibrate and I let out a muffled scream as the rune on my stomach burned.
"This creature has cast its wicked spell over my son!" I immediately snapped my attention back to Sebastian as Carter stood beside him. As I watched Carter drew his shirt over his head to expose the now glowing rune over his heart.
The crowd drew an intake of breathe as some fainted and threw vulgar words my way.
I scowled them and threw myself back to pull at the cuffs. Adjusting myself I got to a standing position. Sebastian silenced the crowd,"Now, now...this rune gave my beloved son the secret to what this creature truly is. And as her blood will help create our own race, my son has given himself as the sacrifice to our cause by marrying the horrid creature. But, before we continue with the wedding plans I have a present for you all."
The crows murmured with ideas, but I watched as Sebastian walked out of view and Carter crossed the stage to come around to my face.
"You son of a bitch." I hissed."Pitting all these people against me, you're the jackass who drew the runes. As soon as I get out of these chains, I'm going to...."
"Cecily, please...just listen to me. My father he needs you and I, we need these people to hate you. Without hatred they'll hunt you, and use your power..."
"I have the same power you have!"
"No, Cecily...you don't." His eyes searched mine,"You are so much more then us. Your power, it will make our race so much more then what we are now. And when you and I are married and start to have children...."
"I don't love you! I won't marry you, and as sure as hell will NOT have kids with you! You hear me clearly, Carter because I won't repeat myself...I will get out of here and kill you and every fifthly bastard in this room, that is a promise." I could feel my eyes glaze over gold as he shook his head.
He sighed,"Your choice of words have only made this worse, Cecily. Either way I will get what I desire from you, whether you like it or not."
His eyes slid from mine to someone behind me. That's when I felt the sharp crack of what only could be known as a whip. Seconds later I felt it rake across my back.
Pain registered as I cringed and the crowd let out a cheer for more. They were granted their wish as I felt it slide across my back tearing my bloody shirt. I slowly fell further and further from my standing position to find the ground coated in my blood. Hours had to past and I felt the life draining from me.
All my mind could think of was the awful pain as I cringed with every lash. My eyes refused to find my mother as she had begun to cry out my name. She turned to crying after the first hour and not a sound penetrated from Andrea behind me.
Two hours of the constant lash and I was about to pass out when I felt the awful pinch between my shoulder blades. It turned to a pain as I arched my back pressing my sweaty forehead to the metal post. The lash never came as Sebastian's voice rang out around the room,"Here is your present my children."
I felt their eyes on me. They were fifthly bastards under my feet. Just as I looked up I caught the gaze of a girl I knew all too well. Victoria.
She stared at me from the doorway. Unlike the other faces filled with anticipation I saw hers plaster with worry. She would not worry about me. You are just hallucinating from the blood lose.
I rolled my head to close my eyes as the pinch grew into a searing pain in which I let out a scream racking through my body. My lungs burned as did my arms as I felt the pinch grow and in an instance it vanished.
A gasp swept through the crowd and I felt them. Only once I had felt this when I was in the dream with Sebastian. The cotton like fabric brushed my bare arms making me use my little energy to gaze around.
My mouth dropped to the floor as I saw something beyond this world. My back no longer was bare but two beautiful wings of white feathers extended from my bloody back. They gleamed with an undeniable beauty and it took all my will to look away from them and too my mother.
The guards had been too astonished by the sight to realize my mother was free and now kneeling down beside me.
"Mom, what...." my voice was strained as I felt the energy leaving my body.
"Shh.." she cupped my face in her hands pushing hair from my face,"Cecily, you need to stay awake, hear me? When you have these, you need to stay awake."
"But..."
"Sweetheart I know how much pain you are in, please sweetheart just stay awake."
Her thumbs rubber against my cheekbones,"Mom..." I blinked slowly feeling the pain seep into my bones,"Mom, what....what am I?"
She leaned forward as she gently placed a kiss on my forehead and whispered, "You are an angel, Cecily."
