Barry's pov

"We need to get off at the next stop," Cassidy whispers, "so wake up the other two boys.

"Why? Where are we?" I ask, rubbing the sleep out of my eyes.

"We just crossed into Missouri," she answers, "You three have slept the entire time we were in Kansas."

"Oh. Did I miss anything interesting?" I question. She snorts and shakes her head no. Then Cassidy walks back up to her seat beside Piper. I shake Carter and Jasper awake. We sit in silence waiting for the bus to stop.

Blue's pov

As soon as we saw Officer Marcus's face, we knew that it was a fail. Shocker. Not like we warned him or anything. Oh wait.

"Well, it appears that the delinquents, er, kids, are smarter than we thought. We investigated and they never even showed up to the airport. Also, they left their cell phones in the bush in front of Mr. Irwin's house," he informs us. Now, I'm worried sick about the kids and I'm mad at them for running off too, but I couldn't help but smile slightly. This had Piper written all over it. From the proud look on Luke's face, he knew it was his daughter too. Officer Marcus notices Luke's expression and scowls even more.

"Do you think this is funny, Mr. Hemmings?" He demands, getting awfully close to my brother. I snicker, but cover it up with a cough. Calum, Michael, and Ashton notice and smile as well, clearly fighting off giggles.

"No," Luke says, trying to keep in his laugh, "not at all."

"Laugh all you want. It's your kids," Marcus snaps.

"That it is," Luke replies, that proud look still on his face. He was always really proud of how smart Piper is. Now, I know it's not exactly hard to beat, but she's easily smarter than any of us. And now she's apparently beaten the police.

"Is this the work of your son?" The cop demands, his expression changing.

"Oh God no," Luke laughs. We all love Carter to death, but he doesn't really think about things. He just does.

"My daughter," he continues. Officer Marcus's expression was unreadable. He simply turns and walks away.

Barry's pov

"You got all of that from a little mess and a scrap of paper?" I ask, shocked at what Piper just told us.

"There was also the chloroform stain and the huge boot print," she reminds me.

"There isn't no one smarter than my sister," Carter exclaims, throwing his arm around his sister.

"Isn't anyone, Carter. You can't use a double negative," Piper corrects.

"See?" Carter jokes, smiling. Piper laughs. I feel a pang of sadness. Violet and I used to be like that. No. We still are. She's not gone. Just, missing. Temporarily absent.

"We should probably get some sleep if we're getting back on the road before nine in the morning," Jasper advises. We were all sitting in a motel room that we had for the night.

"He's right. Girls get one bed and boys get the other?" Cassidy suggests.

"But there's two of you and three of us," I whine.

"Then sleep on the floor Barry," she replies, her eyes sparkling. I roll my eyes at her joke and climb onto my bed, exhausted.
