"So, who's the guy?" Mathias asks as he and Peter walk around the wall. Even though our fire was out, I could see their outlines.
"Pap-" Peter began when suddenly there was a gun shot.
Tino started the fire again and we saw Svergie with a rifle to his face, Denmark holding his left shoulder, and Sealand lying on the dirt beside him from where Berwald pushed him out of his line of sight.
"The hell, Ber!" Mathias yells.
"Ya've been b'tten havn't ya?" Sweden replies steadily.
Denmark makes eye contact with me and quickly looks away.
"What...? No..." He adds defensively.
Tino, Peter and I look at them with much concern.
'It must've happened earlier when he was fighting them alone...' I thought.
"Then wh'ts with th' sh'lder?"
Silence.
"Tino, Peter, y'r with me. We're leavin' this infected." Sweden says. Too much seriousness in his voice even for him. He means it.
"W-wait Berwald. W-we don't have to be so drastic..." Tino piped up. He was kneeling by the fire in front of me and had his left arm stretched out towards them.
"No. H's danger'us. L'ts go." The swede said sternly.
Mathias' expression carried the feelings of everyone but Sweden. Surprise, distrust, betrayal, and a slight trace of terror. I slowly flipped myself over, onto my side, careful not to further pain myself. I think Sealand might have been crying.
"B-but Norge is hurt!" Tino tried to beg Sweden to stay together, but there was no swaying him.
Swedens eyes flicked toward me after Tino warned him of my injury, but he quickly changed his gaze to Denmark. As if checking his every move for flaw. At the slightest clue of sickness, Berwald would shoot. The silence just made the tension rise.
"Berwald! We can't just leave them!" Tino added.
"We c'n an' we will."
Sealand got up and ran to Tino, hanging onto him as if life itself was trying to tear them apart. Mathias stepped back a few inches. Anger spreading across his face. My lips parted in surprise; I haven't seen anger on that face in decades.
"C'mon you two... I know you don't get along the best, but this is going too far." I said, finally adding myself into the debate. "We're on our way to find Iceland. I have an idea of where he might be..."
"'S much 'S I w'nt to find Ice, I c'nt trust this inf'cted."
"Berwald. It's me! De-" Mathias gets cut off as Sweden dashes forward and pulls his sleeve down, revealing a bite mark oozing blood.
"G've me one reas'n why I sh'ldnt shoot you right now."
"Because I need to find Iceland! And I need to make sure Norway is okay!" Denmark shouted.
Berwald pushed him away. His glasses cracked and askew on his face. He walked over to Tino and Peter and pulled them up.
"No excus's." He said.
Tino looked back at me apologetically and gathered his stuff. As the three of them walked away, Peter and Tino turned to look at us before disappearing into the trees covered by night and ash. Mathias fell to his knees.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, Norge. " he put a hand to his face. I awkwardly crawled over to him and threw my arms around his neck, pulling him close to me.
"It's not your fault, Den. We'll work through this, I promise."
"You do?"
"Yes, of course. I love you, you stupid Dane and I'm used to you gettin' yourself into problems like this."
"Heh, I love you too, Norge"
The wind blew the fire out so it was nothing more than a few red-hot ashes. Denmark hugged me back and leaned on me so I fell on my back. We both winced slightly from our injuries, but we didn't take much notice. He kissed me kindly, and I kissed back, making it deeper and more harsh. I didn't want to lose him like I did with the rest of my family just now, so I clung to him, probably making scratch marks on his back as I did so. He ran his fingers through my, now shoulder-length, hair and ...;)
