Journey

I blow out the small fire I created from last night and quickly scavenge the old building. Nothing but paper and broken glass. Typical.

I walk out, carefully scanning my area. Besides yesterday, it had been a little over a month since the last time I walked on my own. I don't see anything worth worrying about and set off. Continuing my journey to Denmark in search of my younger brother.

~TIME SKIP~

It feels like hours. It probably has been hours, actually.  Not a living soul besides rats and bugs. Man, those things are resilient. I look up at the sky. The sun still meekly making its way through the sky. Trying its best to filter through the ash-ridden clouds. What I wouldn't do to see the beautiful blue sky right now. No time for daydreaming though. Especially not in the middle of the street. This may only be my second day out here, but I know enough about end-of-the-world scenarios to know that when you're out in the open, no matter what you think, you're not safe. Just a sitting duck. I keep on. Making sure not to step on anything that might go through my shoes of cause enough sound to alert someone to my position. Carefully making my way down the street, navigating around the rotting bodies, broken glass, and beaten cars.
Another couple of hours later and I come across a giant fence. I see a few people by, what looks like a crop, on the inside of the fence and walk over to it to talk to them.

"Hallo" I say. The three men digging close to me look up, startled.
"Wer bist du? Warum bist du hier? Verlassen. Jetzt." They snap angrily. I'm rusty at German but I can understand they don't want me here at all. ((Who are you? What are you doing here? Leave. Now.))
"Ich brauche deine Hilfe..." (( I need your help...))I say, somewhat pleadingly. This must be one of those government-run places Berwald told me about back at the shelter. I guess me being outside of the fence makes me an outlaw of sorts... Great.
"Werden wir die Regierung erhalten, wenn Sie verlassen nicht. Oder uns anzuschließen." (( we will get the government if you don't leave now. Or join us.)) one man says.
I have no intention of ever joining one of these things until I find my family, and getting into trouble with the government is definitely not on my bucket list. So I bolt. Turn the other direction and run as fast as I can until I can't see the top of the fence anymore. Which isn't too long of a way but for my weakened body, it feels like forever.
Uh oh. I hear a loud obnoxious sound ringing through my head. Sirens. Someone must have reported me. I don't have anything to fend myself with so I run as fast as I can. Making sharp turns around what's left of the buildings. I hear some sort of vehicle behind me but don't turn to look.
