"Mama, don't I make a pretty princess?" Melody wonders as she twirls around in her Snow White dress."Oh you're beautiful, lamb." I tell her and kiss her cheek. "Are you ready to go trick or treating?"
"We have to wait for Uncle Alex, Aunt Kelly, and the baby!" She reminds me and I smile.
Kelly had her baby the first week of October, a baby boy and my brother Alex was over the mother fucking moon! They had a little boy that they named Aric and he's absolutely adorable. Melody was so excited to be a big cousin and being around the baby is good to prepare her for when our twins come along.
"Don't forget about Aunt Valerie and Uncle Eddie." I remind her and she lights up.
"Oh yeah!" My daughter beams and I smile.
We've had this tradition for since Melody was about two where we all take her trick or treating. The first few Halloweens it was my brothers', their wives, their band, Tommy, Nikki, Mick, and Vince because everyone worshipped the ground my baby girl walked on. Every year or so the group changes a bit and this year Tommy, Nikki, Mick, and Vince are all on tour.
"Do you want to call daddy before we go trick or treating?" I wonder.
"Yeah!!" Melody squeals and I laugh.
"Come on, baby." I coax as I grab her hand.
Melody goes and sits at the kitchen table and I go to get the cordless phone. I dial Tommy's hotel number and put the phone on speaker so both Melody and I can talk to Tommy. It rings a few times before my husband answers the phone.
"Hello?" He answers.
"Daddy!" Melody yells and I can almost hear him smile. "I'm a pretty princess, daddy!"
"Oh little lamb, I knew that already. Did you look in a mirror?" Tommy asks and I smile as Melody turns pink. "Katie are you here too?"
"Yeah, baby." I smile.
"I love you." Tommy tells me and my smile broadens.
"I love you too." I tell him.
"What about me?" Melody asks and Tommy laughs.
"Of course my apologies, little lamb." He jokes. "We love you very much." He promises her and she smiles. "Is mama eating, lamb?"
"Yes she is, mama said the babies wanted grapes and Caesar sauce." My daughter explains.
That is true the babies did want grapes dunked in Caesar sauce. Melody thought it was fucking weird and I'm not denying it. That is a weird fucking combination but it tastes good to the twins growing inside of me.
"Babe, that's so weird." Tommy laughs.
"I know but your children want them." I remind him with a laugh. "You're taking care of yourself, right Tommy?"
"Yes, wife." He agrees in a jokey tone and I smile. "I miss you girls so much."
"We miss you too, daddy." Melody admits.
"I think the babies know you're gone." I admit and touch my stomach. "They miss you, love."
"Yeah, I miss all four of you so much." Tommy admits. "I can't wait until Christmas."
Tommy
"Alex and Katie just got here, baby." Katie tells me and I frown. "I'll call you when we get back from trick or treating, okay?"
"Be careful, both of you." I plead.
"We will. I love you, Tommy." Katie tells me and I smile.
"I love you, daddy!" Melody cries and my smile broadens.
"I love you both so much." I assure them.
The phone hangs up and I look around my hotel room, it feels weird being by myself. I'd give everything to be joke with my wife and my daughter. I miss the noise of having a small child. I miss Katie's cooking and the way she sings softly while she's doing things around the house. I miss standing in Melody's doorway and watching Katie read to our daughter before bed. I miss Melody waking me up for breakfast. I miss Melody's hugs and Katie's kisses. I miss everything about home.
I think it's because I know how high risk this pregnancy will turn and I don't want Katie alone for any of it. I know that Eddie and Alex won't let her do anything that could potentially be dangerous to her or the babies but I won't actually stop worrying until I'm home again.
Katie and I haven't been fighting yet and I'm hoping I'm not going to jinx it. It might just be because I haven't been gone all that long but I really don't want to fight with Katie. Remember when we were fighting then Katie was put into the hospital? I definitely don't want that to happen while she's pregnant. I want her pregnancy with our twins to be as stress free as possible.
I must've fallen asleep at some point but I don't really remember when. I was woke up by the phone ringing and I was almost ready to scream at the person on the other end but then I heard the voice that was calling me.
"Hi Tommy, I should've called you sooner but Melody was being fussy about going to bed. Uncle Eddie let her drink a can of coke." Katie explains with a laugh and my mood is instantly lifted.
"So she was bouncing off the walls?" I ask with a laugh.
"Just a bit." My wife laughs.
"What are you doing, baby?" I ask.
"Going through Melody's candy to make sure there's nothing suspicious." Katie explains. "She got a lot of candy this year."
"So how much did you eat?" I gossip.
"None of it!" She states but I know she's a liar.
"Liar." I laugh.
"I maybe had a couple of jolly ranchers." Katie mumbles. "I'm scared Melody is going to choke on them."
"So you're keeping all of them and going to eat them when she's at school." I guess.
"Shut up, you'd do the same thing." She states and I laugh.
"I know." I admit with a laugh. "I miss you, Katie. Like more than the last time."
"I know the feeling. Why is it harder thing time around?" Katie asks.
"Because of the babies. I'm worried about you being pregnant and alone." I explain.
"Tommy." She sighs.
"I know it's stupid but it's true." I say.
"Christmas will be here before you know it." Katie promises.
God, I hope she's right.
