It was about three weeks after my dad's funeral when I had my first doctor's appointment for the baby. If Tommy and I did our math right I should be about six weeks pregnant. I'm more anxious about this pregnancy than I was for my first one so Tommy came with me to the doctors, we dropped Melody off at Eddie and Valerie's.Tommy and I sit in the uncomfortable waiting room chairs with women in all different stages of pregnancy. I hate the way they look at Tommy and I. I hate how they look at my husband for starters because I know they know exactly who he is and they're all drooling over him. I hate they way they look at my tiny frame, like they envy me for being tiny and pregnant. I just hate it so much.
My husband grabs my hand which draws my attention to him. Tommy smiles at me and pecks my lips.
"Katie, please stop worrying." He whispers and squeezes my hand. "The baby is going to be perfectly fine."
"How can you be sure?" I wonder and his smile broadens.
"Because I do." Tommy states quietly and I laugh.
"I hate the way these pregnant broads look at you. " I mumble and he kisses me again.
"Is someone jealous?" He laughs. "I don't like how they look at you, baby. They're so envious and it makes me want to hurt them."
"You can't hurt pregnant broads." I remind him and he smiles.
Before Tommy can say anything my name gets called and we are lead back towards the rooms. We're told what room to go into and I sit up on the table, I remember this procedure from when I was pregnant with Melody.
Tommy
I know that Katie is nervous, she's been on edge since we left The Netherlands. She has reason to be but I'm worried for her wellbeing and our baby's wellbeing. I know Katie is also really worried about our baby.
"Katie, baby." I whisper and kiss her forehead. "Everything is going to be alright." I promise her.
"As soon as I hear a heartbeat I'll be okay." Katie promises me with a smile.
The doctor walks in and asks a few questions before actually starting the ultrasound. Katie moves around uncomfortably while the doctor keeps telling her to sit still, my wife takes a deep breath and tries her damnedest to keep herself calm.
After a few minutes a strong rhythm pumps out of the machine and I smile, that's my baby with a perfect and strong heartbeat. Katie lights up and she squeezes my hands. Before our eyes (or ears, I guess) another, different strong rhythm pumps out of the machine. Katie looks up at me confused before looking at the doctor.
"Huh." The doctor smiles to herself. "You're pregnant with twins, congratulations."
"Twins?" My wife asks with wide eyes.
"Yes."
"Like two babies inside my little wife?" I ask the doctor and she nods. "You see how small Katie is, how the hell is her body supposed to carry twins for another eight and a half months?"
"Just like your daughter did they'll make room." The doctor says.
That's what I'm worried about, this pregnancy I think could be dangerous for Katie.
Eddie
"Come on, little lamb." I say as I grab her hand. "Let's go see mama and daddy."
Valerie takes Melody's other hand as we walk up the front path to Tommy and Katie's house. My wife looks at me over our niece's head and smiles at me.
"I hope everything went okay with Katie's appointment." Valerie says and I smile.
"I know everything went fine, Katie would've called us if there was something wrong." I say and Melody looks up at me.
"There's something wrong?" She asks with wide eyes.
"Oh god no, lamb. Everything is great." I promise her as I open the front door.
Melody instantly finds her mom and runs up to her. Katie smiles and picks her daughter in a hug. My little sister smiles at me.
"Was she good?" Katie asks and I kiss her hair.
"She's always good." I promise her as Tommy walks in behind her.
Valerie comes up beside me and we watch the happy little family interact. Tommy is probably the best thing that has ever happened to my baby sister. Even though nothing quite happened ideally but everything worked out.
"I'm going to go put Melody down for a nap, you won't be getting many of those once you start school." Katie tells her daughter and walks towards the stairs.
"But mama--"
"But nothing, little lamb." Katie smiles as she walks up stairs.
"Night night, daddy! Night night, Uncle Eddie! Night night, Auntie Valerie!" Melody calls as she's carried up stairs.
"Goodnight, little lamb." We all call as she disappears up stairs.
Valerie turns to Tommy and smiles excitedly.
"So? How did everything?" She wonders and he sighs.
"I'm not sure yet." He admits and sits down on the couch.
What the hell is that supposed to mean? Is Katie okay?
"Wait, what do you mean?" Valerie wonders and sits down beside him.
"Yeah, is Katie okay? Is the baby okay?" I wonder as I sit down in the arm chair.
"Babies." Tommy comments and I look at him.
"Pardon?" I ask.
"Babies, like plural. There's two of them inside my wife." He explains. "Twins."
I think for the first time in my life I'm absolutely speechless, like I can't fathom the proper words. My premature baby sister, who wasn't supposed to make it through the night, who doesn't break one hundred pounds, who stayed the size of a toothpick her entire first pregnancy is carrying twins inside of her.
"She's so little..." Valerie trails off. "Is it a high risk pregnancy?" Tommy sighs again.
"You can't tell Katie yet but the doctor told me that the bigger the babies get the more her organs are going to be damaged." He explains. "As soon as she's four mouths pregnant this gets labeled a high risk pregnancy for her and the babies."
"Well how can we help?" I ask. "Alex and I are.." I trail off because he smiles.
"I know and I'm thankful for that." Tommy admits. "Right now we just have to keep things around her as calm as possible."
"Don't you go on tour again in October?" Valerie wonders and he frowns.
"I'm not wanting to but I know that I'm going to half to." He mumbles. "I definitely don't want Katie here by herself...too much can go wrong."
"That's where Alex and I come in." I laugh. "She's your wife but she was our baby sister first."
