Let's take a moment to appreciate Garroth's face right about now (> ᗜ <)

~ Zane's POV ~

The next, while I was reading a book, I heard the doorbell ring. This time I wasn't so hesitant on answering. I practically ran to the door and fumbled with the lock, hoping Y/N would be there at the door.

And there she was.

"Well, aren't you feeling happy today, busboy!" Y/N giggled. I realized my eyes were squinting in a way that showed I was smiling. I blushed, embarrassed.

"...D-do you want to come in... bus girl?" I asked, trying to regain my composure. "Sure, thanks." She stepped inside and looked around. "Wow, for a guy that never had visitors, you keep this place tidy."

I scoffed and rolled my eyes. "Huh. I don't know if that's supposed to be a compliment or an insult." Y/N laughed, though not at me, like kids back then usually did. Her laugh made me want to laugh right along with her, and it was all I can do not to.

"Do you want something? Water? Coffee? Tea?" I asked, about to head into the kitchen. "Water, thank you." She replied as she sat down on the couch. "I'm surprised with your hosting skills. What'd you do? Look it up in case someone decides to visit you?"

I grunted, seeing that she apparently likes making fun of my sociability. "Breaking news: I did have guests over before. Back when I still lived with my parents, I used to act as a host when they had business partners or friends over. Sometimes those people would ask me about school or something. Honestly, talking to adults is easier than socializing."

I went to the kitchen and poured a glass of water for Y/N, then one for myself. I came back and gave her the water and sat down next to her on the couch. We sat there in silence for a while.

"Do you have any brothers or sisters?" Y/N asked, breaking the silence.

"Yeah. Two brothers. Garroth and Vylad. I'm sure you've met Garroth already." She nodded. "Vylad is off Irene-knows-where. Never bothered to check."

"Never bothered to check? Aren't you even close with your siblings?"

"No."

"Does that mean... Am I your only friend?"

"I guess."

Y/N's face scrunched up, deep in thought. She then turned to me and grabbed my shoulders.

"What are you-"

She leaned in close. My breath hitched. My heart starts racing. My whole face feels like a tomato.

She said in a small voice "...I'm not leaving you alone if that's the case. I know we just met two days ago, but I can tell you need a friend beside you. 'Kay?" I nodded, but then I asked, "What do you mean you're not leaving me alone?"

"I'll visit you every day you're not working, which is...?"

"...Saturday, Sunday, and Wednesday."

"Right. I'll visit you those days so that you won't spend your life alone. Tell me I'm the nicest person in the world."

"You're the craziest person in the world."

Y/N dropped her hands from my shoulders and let out a sigh. "Zane... please? I know you need someone in your life to help you get through things, or at least someone that's there so that you won't feel so lonely. I'm here now, so... I-I don't want to leave you alone..."

She looked down at her lap. Tears fell, and she was shaking. I realized that this was more than just helping a friend out. I remembered back on the bus how her eyes went lifeless when she talked about her mom. Maybe...

... Maybe something happened with her parents.

I reached out and held her chin in my hand, then lifted her head up, so she was facing me. I gently wiped away the tears sliding down her cheeks. I pulled down my mask and smiled at her.

"You can come any day I'm not working. I'm grateful you came over today. You're crazy, but... you're sincere and generous, and I appreciate that about you." Y/N smiled and pulled me in for a hug. I was startled at first, but after a moment I hugged back. For the first time in a long time, I felt overjoyed.

"Zane?"

"Hm."

"I know why you wear that mask."

"Why?"

"You're trying to hide those freckles, aren't you?

"Yeah."

"Don't. I won't be able to see you smile when you do."

Again, sorry for the lack of posts (publishes? idek). Had writer's block, lack of motivation, merciless schoolwork, etc. It happens. But now it's winter break and I have more time and inspiration to write more ^^

Hope you enjoyed this chapter (kinda proud of this one :P). I'll see ya in the next chapter!~
