I knocked on the door to Katelyn and Kawaii~Chan's house with Zane by my side.
"Are you sure this is a good idea?" Zane questioned.
"It's the best idea! Come on! You're able to socialize and make friends with no harm, so why not?"
"Remember, I haven't socialized in forever in forever, and throwing me in with a bunch of people isn't going to help me ease my way back into talking to people."
"True. But! I'm never leaving your side, so I can always help you if people decide to speak to you. With me by your side, you'll be popular in no time!"
"I'm not sure if I want to be popular on this street. Plus, even if I wanted to, you're obviously not gonna help."
I stuck out my tongue at him. "Meh. Like you can do anything by yourself."
"Hey, I can --"
The door opened, and Kawaii~Chan was at the door. "Y/N~Sama! And --" She stared at Zane with wide eyes, swallowed, then managed a grin. "Zane~Kun! I didn't expect to see you here!"
"Hm."
"Er... Come in! It's great to see you."
As Zane and I walked through the doorway, Kawaii~Chan wrapped her arms around me in an embrace. "Congratulations on your new job, Y/N~Sama. I knew you could do it!" She murmured, and I smiled. "Thanks, Kawaii~Chan. I'm glad."
We stepped inside the house and looked around. So many people! I glanced at Zane nervously. Maybe he's right. He hasn't socialized with anyone except adults. I'd better help him...
Out of somewhere, Laurance came up to us. "Hey, Y/N... Is that Zane?" Nice to see you, man! It's been a while..." Laurance gave Zane a friendly pat on the back. Zane kept his lowered. I decided to speak up for him.
"U-uh... Did you guys ever go to school together?"
"Yeah. We both went to Pheonix Drop High. Zane never really talked much. I figured he was shy. But he was brilliant. You won that National Literature Award for writing an essay on some book, didn't you Zane?"
"Yeah, it was in the novel [Insert Book Name Here -.-]"
"Ah! I remember reading that book in English class. It was an interesting book."
"Really? I thought it was interesting, too. It brought up some interesting concepts.."
I smiled. This is a good start. But I can tell Zane will take a while, so I guess I'll just back away...
"Hey! You're not going anywhere, Y/N." Laurance wrapped his arm around my shoulders and pulled me closer to him. I blushed. This is weird.
I see Zane furrowing his eyebrows.
"I'm so glad you came over tonight. I wanted to ask you something." Laurance said, smiling down at me. I blushed harder and tucked a piece of hair behind my ear. What does he want to tell me?
Zane cleared his throat loudly. We both looked at him. "Yes?" Laurance asked.
"Nothing, sorry. Dry throat." Zane grunted.
"Well... There's a water jug on that table over there. Help yourself."
"Sure, thanks." Zane stalked over to the refreshments table, but not before giving Laurance a dirty look. I watched him walk away, worried. I thought they were getting along just fine a moment ago. Is Zane having trouble with socializing? I should talk to him...
"Hey, Laurance, I... I need to go talk to Zane." I took his arm off my shoulders and hurried towards Zane, barely giving Laurance time to say something.
"Hey... Zane?"
"What do you want?"
"Are you okay?"
"I'm fine."
"Zane, I --"
"Y/N, why don't you just go back to your boyfriend Stupid Laurance and leave me alone?!"
"Zane, what is this all about? You can tell me. Please."
He looked at me with the same angry expression, but his eyes had softened a bit. I want to help him, but... what is it? He suddenly stormed through the house of people and out the door leading to the backyard.
I followed him.
~~~
The noise of loud music, people cheering, and crickets humming occupy the dimly-lit backyard. I looked around and saw Zane sitting on the bench with his head in his hands. I sat down next to him.
"Hey..."
"Hey."
"You know you can tell me anything."
"I know."
"Well... Is there something on your mind?"
"Yeah."
"What is it?"
"..."
I looked at him his hair covered his face, I reached out and tucked a piece of hair behind his ear. At this point, I don't know what to do or what to say, but I felt like I needed to do something.
"You treat me like a child." He said.
"I don't care."
A few moments passed.
"... I wish I could tell you everything. I really do."
"So, what's holding you back?"
Zane looked at me for a moment, hesitated, then said, "Y/N, I really li--"
"HEYYYY, Y/NNN, COME JOIN THE PARTY! ERRRRYONESS GONNA GO DANCIN'!" Brendan poked his head out the door, looking a little tipsy.
I can't help but laugh a little, then stop knowing that I need to be serious with Zane. I waved Brendan off. I looked back at Zane. He was smiling as well.
"What is it?" I asked.
"Wanna go dancing?"
I was surprised. But I smiled. "Sure."
