"You know you're real crazy coming over at 4 am to talk," I said, handing Y/N a cup of hot tea.
"Pfft. As if it's the craziest thing I've done. I'm not that tired, though I don't know about you. Plus, you've got a story to tell, and you're not telling it to me over the phone." She took a sip of tea and flinched, shutting her eyes tight. "I-I think I just scalded my whole digestive system."
I laughed in spite of Y/N being in pain. She's adorable when she does dumb things. "The tea was still hot," I said. "I'm surprised you hadn't noticed before you drank from it."
"Why'd you give me boiling tea in the first place?!" She demanded.
"Because I didn't know someone would be dumb enough to drink it right after I made it!" I retorted, nudging her arm with my shoulder.
Y/N laughed and gave me a slight shove. She put her cup down on the coffee table. "Okay. You win. I'm stupid. Now let's hear that story!" She clapped her hands together two times. "We don't have all day!"
I smiled, crossed my arms, then leaned back on the couch.
"Well, it started when my mother was still pregnant with me. She had rheumatic fever, causing heart problems for her and me. The treatments suggested by the doctor didn't help, and the illness grew into something more serious. Then my mom had no other choice but to turn to magicks. She talked to a witch doctor (this kind of doctor only dealt with potions the way Lucinda does, not a witch doctor that says "Ooh Ee Ooh Ah Ah-" I'll stop now ._.). The doctor prescribed this one potion that would cure both my mother and me. However, the potion had a side effect. The person who consumes this potion are at risk of experiencing constant nightmares. My mom thought it would affect her, and she was willing to take that risk for my being.
"It wasn't until I was five years old when I started having nightmares in my sleep. It started appearing a few times a month, then the rate of nightmares increased over time. I came crying to my parents every time I had a nightmare. Since it has been so constant, my parents became worried. Soon they began to realize that I was the one who's affected by the potion. We came back to the witch doctor and told him what was happening. He said that the only way the curse will break is when I take control of my nightmare.
"My nightmares were of some alternate universe where I kill people to gain power. Most of them I killed people I didn't know, but there are nights where I 'kill' the people who are close to me, hence why I don't socially interact with people, let alone befriending them. I'd try to stop myself from killing people, but it was difficult. Most times I just gave up. I thought I would never break the curse and I would have to live with this every single day. Sometimes I thought about killing myself; I never knew why I didn't, but I'm glad I never did. I still carried on with life miserably, trying to break this stupid curse. I wasn't able to gain a free will in my dreams up until last night."
I looked back at Y/N, who, I could tell, was staring at me intently while I talked. Y/N, who, I could tell, was watching me intently while I spoke. Y/N straightened up, realizing I finished telling my story.
"That is..." She said slowly. Seriously unbelievable, you're absolutely insane, I'm never going to be your friend ever again? "... so cool! I mean, it's not cool that you were emotionally hurting, and the curse probably affected your childhood deeply, but it's like you're living in a fairytale! You're cursed with this spell, and somehow you managed to break the curse and live happily ever after. But... I'm still confused on how I..." She gestured quotation marks with her fingers. "...'set you free.' What did I do?"
I turned red, then I hesitated, smiling. Y/N raised an eyebrow questioningly. "What's up?", she asked.
"Are you prepared to hear the corniest thing ever?"
Y/N shrugged and said, "Hit me with your best shot, bus boy."
"Okay. Well... you're the only one who reached out to me even after I tried to push you away. Unlike everyone else, you never gave up on me. At first, I thought you were crazy, talking to strangers and everything. Now I know you just like being friends with everybody, even with a troubled introvert like me. The more I spent time with you, the more I know it will hurt when I kill you in my dreams. When the night came and knew I was going to kill you, I couldn't take it anymore. I was willing to fight myself for you. I... didn't want to lose you. You're the best thing that happened to me since... ever. Now the curse is broken, and I can live peacefully. And it's all thanks to you, so... thank you."
Y/N's face looked red and surprised. "I-I don't know what to say... No one has every felt that way before, let alone told me." She hesitated for a minute. "I-"
Her phone started ringing loudly, startling the both of us. Y/N picked up her phone and opened it up. "Oh, crap!" She exclaimed, jumping up. "I'm gonna be late for my job interview. I have to go."
She grabbed her bag, started to leave, then looked back at me. "Speaking of which...don't you have to go to work today?"
"Well, I'm already late, so I'll just call in and take the day off."
"Alright! See you later, busboy!"
I smiled as I watched her rush out the door. I can already tell the future is bright.
