"Let me see if I understood"
Morgan was sitting in her temporary bed. She had taken a shower, gotten rid of this hideous white hospital clothes and dressed into her usual color scheme, black training pants and a black tank top. Nita and Lily had gone though a briefing on how the world worked in this side of the fence.
"The world here is divided in two, divergents and non-divergents. Divergents are worshipped because they have mashed the good things each faction was meant to teach us. And the city is an experiment?"
"It is, they've taken divergents and put them into the city to, you know, breed them basically"
"And the factionless that we've banished?"
"Some of them were divegents on a lower level, and some of them we've located them up north, a few miles away from here" Nita replied
Morgan was getting a headache from all the information she was receiving.
"So what non divergents are useless to this people? If we die they don't care?"
Nita nodded while she pressed her lips into a thin line.
"But, on the brighter side, we now can get to work"
"Work on what?" Morgan frowned
"On liberating the city. It's like you said Morgan, this people don't care about anyone who isn't a divergent. But I bet you do, and we do too. The directors of the department take children from cities near us and they wipe their memory down, and throw them into you city, to see if they're going to be worth their time"
Morgan was sickened, sickened because now that being a mother was an idea that could happen in the future, she would be devastated to have her child taken away from her. Well, she was recovering from one of these disasters.
"What's the plan?"
Nita laughed with a bit of humour
"See that's the thing. We don't have a plan" she said serious "we have a resistance, we have the means and the drive to release the people in the city. And not just for the ones that have been taken into it against their will, but for people like you to stop being guinea pigs of these assholes."
"I bet the people in the director board and divergents too?"
Nita looked at Lily, who was sitting looking at Morgan, not uttering a word.
"There's one or two that aren't, and they're kept there because they're either extremely smart of have another perk that makes them an asset."
"And why do they keep me here? Can't they just let me back in?"
"Morgan, you're the one that is basically getting divergents out of the city, without that the program that you created the results that the experiment worked would be non existent. That is enough reason to keep you here. And you know, to leverage some things in case they need to pull strings within the city"
Morgan let out a dry laugh. Shaking her head she laid on the bed, already tired out of her mind. She missed Eric like crazy, everything she believed was falling apart, she couldn't get out of that mad house.
She let out a tired sigh and closed her eyes.
"For a second we thought you had convinced him" Lily spoke. Morgan opened her eyes and turned her head to her. "We sometimes see what's going on in there, we also have a friend who works in the camera room and gives us the juicy stuff. We all know who you are and we know your guy's story. We've followed it. And I know that's messed up but, I mean you getting in Eric's skin was a thing of revolution in here. The directory was really eager for you to convince Eric that the deal with Erudite wasn't a good thing. Of course, the directory was only looking after their precious divergents."
"Eric has been in an alliance with Erudite ever since he transfered" Nita continued "and he didn't listened to you not because he didn't love you, but because he is already committed, and will continue to be committed with erudite, forever."
"I never doubted that he loved me. It's like he said it, he truly believes that divergents are a threat. What a perfect way to rub this on my face after I said they wouldn't hurt us" she chuckled "he's never going to let me live this down."
She looked at the roof above her head and sighed.
The door of the room was knocked, since it was big enough to fit two single beds and a little nightstand, Nita reached to it from the corner of Lily's bed and opened it.
In came a tall man, brown hair cut neatly to the sides, he was wearing the same outfit as everyone, black pants, black shirt and a slight lighter shade of black for a jacket. From the pocket hanged a little ID.
"Morgan this is Ethan, he's out inside man." Morgan opened her eyes at him, she inspected him for two seconds before she gave him the littlest smile she had with a nod. "And?" She beckoned.
"I have some bad news for Morgan unfortunately"
Morgan was taken aback by his accent, it was one she had never heard before, but she wanted to keep hearing it.
"Dominic spewed everything, to Jeannine non the less"
Morgan rolled her eyes and pinched the bridge of her nose, muttering a 'Fuck' under her breath.
"And she told Eric that he needed to investigate you, objectively. If you're guilty she's not letting you in"
Morgan snorted and shook her head
"And Eric is investigating. He's onto Dominic already. Unfortunately he's kinda given up on looking for you"
Morgan snapped to him again
"He's gone out 6 times already, and he's been so close. But you can't find this place unless they want you to find it."
"If you're divergent" Nita explained.
"So he knows nothing" Morgan concluded.
"Afraid so" he said sadly. "But, he's not as mad as you and you would've thought. Though he's continuing the testing in the city, he's not going to give up until he proves you innocent"
Morgan placed the curve of her elbow over her eyes. She wasn't innocent, she knew that much.
"I think we should leave you guys to rest" Ethan said, Morgan looked at them again and sat on the bed to wave them goodbye properly. Once they were out, Lily stared at her from her bed, she lifted her arm to the light switch near the nightstand and looked at Morgan for approval.
Morgan nodded and laid back down in her bed, the light went out, and she was alone with her thoughts.
Holding the comforter to her chest, she wondered when was the last time she had slept alone.
It was maybe near last year, when Eric and she fought over this matter. After that, she had always slept with Eric's face or figure behind the last thing she saw. She pictured herself being wrapped around his body, Eric's fingers tracing the sides of her face, down to her spine and back up again.
She was so thankful that Eric got over her stubbornness and kissed her before she left dauntless, if they had been drawn apart and on top of that left each other being mad, Morgan would be devastated now, missing him more than what she did now.
∆
Eric laid back in the bed, looking at the other side of the bed empty. He was done for the day, though the guys weren't going to stop searching the cameras over night. Eric needed to go on with the schedule erudite had laid out, and the day after tomorrow he wasn't going to be in dauntless for the day.
Rolling back to the side that would have Morgan in it, he laid his head on her pillow, taking a deep breath and instantly being reminded of Morgan.
He imagined her back pressed against his chest, her neck accessible to him for him to do whatever he wanted with it, her soft breathing and her heart beat thumping against his own.
He missed her like crazy. It was in that moment that he realized that he didn't wanted to be alone ever again, sleeping alone was something he didn't want to experience one more time.
As he closed his eyes, burying his nose in the pillow and inhaling deep, he gave in to sleep.
