The Conversation Continues Ch.36

Late December 2014

"Roc, I do not want to meet any more people." I snapped as Roc tried to get me to meet one of his many uncles.

"Come on, ICCE. It's my family. They've wanted to meet you for the longest." Roc stared at me with with his lips poking out and his eyes wide.

Since I've gotten to L.A on the twentieth, Roc has made me meet sí many of his family members. Aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, friends. He has so many cousins, aunts, and uncles that weren't even blood just good family friends that I could have died. Now on Christmas Day, I have met even more people ans I don't want to meet anymore.

"I will kill you." I glared at him.

"Come on. These are the last people. They're good friends from around the corner. Promise." He smiled and dragged me out of his room where I took refuge from his family.

I sighed as I was pulled into the overcrowded living room.

"Took you long enough." Brittany sighed with her hands on her hips.

"Brittany!" I smiled and hugged her and Ray. "Good friends from around the corner alright."

"Having fun with the family?" Ray asked as we all got something to eat.

"Of course I'm not." I smiled widely and Brittany laughed.

"Not the only one. Too many damn people to keep up with." Brittany said and I high fived her.

"Well damn." Roc and Ray sighed.

Brittany and I talked as the room seemed to get more crowded by the minute. How can his house be this damn popular for Christmas, but not any other day?

"Excuse me! Excuse me! Can y'all be quiet?!" Roc shouted as he stood on a chair next to me and Brittany.

"What are you doing?" I asked him as everyone kept talking.

"Ay! Yo! Shut up!" Roc shouted and everyone turned to him. "Thank you. Now listen."

Everyone was staring at Roc. Being the centre of attention wasn't his favorite thing-- he'd rather be in the background. So I had no idea what he was doing.

"Okay, everyone, most of y'all have known me since I was a child and have watched me grow here and with my group, Mindless Behavior. Before I get to what I really want to say, I just want to say thank you for everything everyone has helped me with. I appreciate it." Roc said. Everyone clapped after he finished. "Now, I'm nervous as hell, so excuse me while I make a fool of myself. Ray."

Roc motioned to Ray. Ray handed him a box. A black velvet box. Roc jumped down from the chair and walked towards me.

Please don't do this now.

"Isis, I know I can be and have been an asshole. I know I'm a cheater and a lair. And I know that I don't deserve you at all. But what I do know is that we belong together. Through everything you have always loved me and have taken me back even after I messed everything up for us. So I ask you now, will you take this promise ring? My promise to you that not only will we get married sometime in the future, but I will always be faithful to you." Roc got down on one knee and I tried to hold in my tears as I was rendered speechless.

The silence in the room was loud. The stillness creeped on everyone as they waited for my answer.

"Come on, baby. I know you're speechless, but at least nod or something." Roc smiled up at me.

I nodded, not trusting my voice. Roc smiled as he slid the gold, diamond promise ring onto my left hand. He picked me up and swung me around.

Everyone errupted in cheers as Roc and I held each other.

"Merry Christmas, baby." I whispered in his ear, the tears spilling out of my eyes. I saw Brittany smiling as I looked over Roc's shoulder.

"Merry Christmas, ICCE. I love you." He sighed.

"I love you, too." I smiled.

Later, after everyone was gone from the house and the house was clean, Roc and I sat on his bed together. Not talking, not doing anything inappropriate. Just laying there together.

"Thank you for not making me look stupid in front of my fam." Roc said suddenly.

"By what? Saying no?" I asked. "I could never have told you no."

"I thought you were going to." He sighed. I felt his sadness radiate around the room.

"Because you thought I was still hurt and upset? Roc, I forgave so long ago. I love you. If I didn't I wouldn't be here. You know that." I said, placing my head in his chest.

"Yeah, I know that, but I still can't help thinking that you can't anymore." Roc said, sounding like he was struggling with his words. More like struggling to put his emotions and thoughts into words.

"I love you and forgave you, so shut up about it. You're ruining the happy mood." I kissed him softly and he smiled.

"Fine." He leaned back onto the bed. "Where's my gift?"

"Right here." I kissed him again then pulled away.

"Isis, my momma here." Roc whispered, looking at his door in fear.

"But doing it in Miss Wendy's house was okay?" I asked.

"Okay. Good point. But all Miss Wendy would have done was put me out the house. My momma gonna kick my ass, put me out, find me, kill me, dig my grave and then dance on it. I'm more afraid of my momma." Roc said in one breathe.

"Okay." I turned the light off and turned away from him.

"So I don't get my gift?" Roc asked.

"Shut up, Roc." I sighed.

"Fine." He sighed as he wrapped his arms around me.
