Around 4, CJ walked through the door.
"Hey kiddo. How was school?" "It was fine...Can I ask you a personal question?" "How personal are we talking?" I cocked an eyebrow and my son with slumped shoulders and pink cheeks. "Nevermind...I'll look it up in the internet."  CJ said, walking to his room. "CJ! I was kidding. What's your question?" I laughed. "Well...youre a girl right?" CJ asked me. I bit my lip to suppress my laughter. "Last time I checked... What's going on?" "I know Dad was your first boyfriend but did you have crushes in school?" "I did...I would've had boyfriends in school too but I payed to much attention to school." "What would you do to hint to a boy that you liked him?" "I'd stare at him a lot...I'd ask for help on my homework even if I didn't need it... If he was smart...I'd laugh at all his jokes...even if they weren't funny. I'd turn bright red when he'd talk to me and have a hard time maintaining normal eye contact." I thought back to those dark days of piles of homework, acne, peer pressure and awkward flirting.
I was happy to be having this talk with CJ though. As a mom, I had been waiting for the day that my son admits he has a crush on someone. "What would guys do to hint to you that they likes you?" "They would invite me places, buy me lunch, do my homework for me, accidentally bump into me and offer to walk me to class and sometimes if they were bold enough, they'd leave a letter in my locker." "All of that really happened to you?" I nodded. "So... hypothetically speaking...if I liked a girl in my class...what would be the best way to tell her?" "Awe CJ. You have your first crush!" I teased my son. "Mom, please...Just answer my hypothetical question." "I'd offer her help on her classwork...maybe leave a note in her locker when you're more sure if her feelings...What's she like?" "Who?" "The girl you like!" "I don't like anyone...girls have coodies!" CJ put his head down and his ears were bright red. "CJ." I said in a stern tone. "Ugh. Fine. Her name is Sohyun. She's this girl in my class that is super smart, super pretty, super sweet and she sits in front of me. She is always dropping notes on my desk and laughing at all my jokes. She asks for help on our homework a lot and sticks up for me when the guys in class make fun of me." I listened to my son gush over this girl. "She sounds great." I smiled.
