“Because…because…Kenna loves him. And it really isn’t fair to keep two people apart for five years when they could be together. The only thing stopping them from being together is the barriers that were created in those five years. It takes longer to create barriers than to destroy them…and I think we can destroy them pretty quickly if we dedicate ourselves,” I explained. “And besides, he’s worth it, isn’t he?”
He nodded slowly with a growing smile, “He really is.”
I decided just then that he didn’t talk much. Which was fine with me, I guess.
CHAPTER 9
I went back to watching Pup hop up the tree, howling and sending frigidly playful growls into the branches. The black bird wasn’t phased and rested up high and safe in the branches.
“I’m back!” Kenna called loudly, making me jump again. I tipped my head, smiling at her.
“There ya are!”
“Here I am!” Kenna smiled slightly and looked around, then looked seemingly disappointed and her eyes flashed purple.
“What?” I questioned.
“Huh?” she looked at me, putting the wood down. She began to arrange the branches and dry yellow grass.
“You look disappointed,” I said. I left out the purple eyes part.
“Oh well, what do you know?” she smiled slightly, not answering my question at all and I let it go.
Within moments, they had a small flame dancing across the dead life and Kenna tempted it to get bigger, shadows lighting her face. She had a nice flickering shadow brightening her features it didn’t mask, making her look majestic and mysterious. I, however, received a mouthful of smoke, and it sent me into a coughing fit. How mysterious and majestic, right?
“Doing okay over there?” Kenna smiled, leaning away from the fire, wiping her dirtied hands on her jeans.
I smiled meekly, “Oh yes. All is superb over here.”
“Superb,” Kenna repeated, testing the word, “Superb. Super. Supper. Ah! Josh, hurry with that rabbit already!”
Josh laughed, placing the raw and bloody meet directly onto the burning wood, “It’ll take a while to cook.”
Kenna groaned and my own stomach complained in hunger and I glanced around, “Well, Kenna…you did say there were berries. We can wet our appetite with some of those. An appetizer, per se.”
“That’d do it! I’ll find some!” and again, as gracefully as before, Kenna disappeared into the brush, leaving but a memory on the undergrowth she passed through.
“Oh goodness,” I sighed and plopped down by the fire, cradling my chin in my hands. The fire twisted and fought other strands of bright light, struggling for the upper hand. Crackle, two flames joined. Snap, a red spark popped from the fire, making the red juices of the meat sizzle and spill out. It was like watching a battle field and I took note, carefully watching the movements and how the smoke appeared thick but I could see right through it. Fire was always so intriguing.
