“Best kisser?” came a voice from near the pool of water and I turned to see Kenna and squealed. My feet moved on their own and dragged me running to my friend and my arms seized her in an unbending hug and suffocated Pup between us.
CHAPTER 18
“You’re alive!” I cheered.
“Of course I am,” she smiled and saved Pup from drowning in between us. I surveyed her with my eyes and felt my stomach tighten when I saw the blood smearing her shirt and the collection of dirt and blood matted into her hair.
“You…,” my voice caught and Josh pulled himself out and Kenna gave me a hug.
“Don’t worry about me! I’ll heal!” she laughed at my reaction and stepped back and a dim light dried herself off in seconds and she tapped Josh’s shoulder and he did the same. “Did you get hurt?” Kenna questioned me.
“I’m fine, but what happened?” I squeaked and Josh came to a stand.
“She hit her head,” he said and Kenna scrutinized me with her eyes and I shrunk back, not appreciating the attention.
“Does it hurt?” Kenna asked.
“I haven’t noticed in the last few minutes,” I said somewhat truthfully and grabbed her shoulders, “AND WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? Trying to take on Asmodeus alone! I don’t care if you’re a WolfLoved or even the prophesized one! You are NOT allowed to EVER do that again! We are in this together, do you understand me?”
Kenna gaped at me and her lips parted and a gust of air huffed out from her lungs, “Huh…?”
“You scared me! You are not doing that again! You need to be alive in order to see Garion again!” I snapped.
“She’s right, Kenna,” Josh added and Kenna scoffed.
“I was doing fine,” she put her hands on her hips, “And Erin, when did you become my mother?”
“Since you started acting like you needed one! Kenna…your life is too important for you to do that,” I said and saturated my tone in all the concern I had experienced.
She frowned and nodded slightly before sinking to the floor to sit down, “Okay…okay…I’m sorry,” she sighed and I sat next to her and hugged her.
“Another thing,” I mumbled, “I am not letting you go. Okay?”
Kenna groaned and laughed slightly, “Okay, I get it. I won’t do that every again.”
“Good! Now what happened?” I demanded to know and Kenna gave Josh a sideways look that I hissed at.
“It doesn’t matter. I’m here now and fine,” she excused my question and I held on tighter.
“It matters!” I argued and she shrugged me off.
“Erin…what matters is we’re okay for now,” she smiled and I folded my arms in stubborn silence.
“For now?” I questioned.
“We’ll be down here for a while…,” Kenna sighed and I gnawed at the inside of my lips. It was a nervous habit I had.
“Erin, your lips aren’t for biting,” Josh spoke up and Kenna sniggered.
“Because he can think of much better things to do with your lips,” she laughed.
