I missed Gram’s flowery scent and her garden out back; I missed her love for nature and her respect for life. I missed Al in all of his glory, I wanted to see his one brown eye and his other blue eye, and hear his ridiculous teasing. I wished to hear Drake lecture me and tell me I was too young to know anything, even though that infuriated me.

A sigh fell from my lips and I let sleep crawl into my thoughts and I drifted into my dreams.

 CHAPTER 15

Poke. Wet. Nose. Poke.

“Pup!” I whimpered and tried pushing away the yipping body of fluff. She nipped at my nose and I sat up quickly before she could take another bite. “What?” my response came sharper than I intended but Pup didn’t seem to notice and she tugged on my pant leg and took off trampling out the door. I pulled on my aging boots and followed her outside and regretted leaving the comfort and warmth of the couch.

“Pup, where are you?” I yawned and she came yelping into my shins and took off to the trees. I let out a low whimper and swiftly tightened my dense coat around my torso before I jogged after my squirming friend.

She led me into the thick of the trees where I lost sight of her and I kept walking, rubbing my hands together, “Pup! Where’d you go?”

I could hear her in the underbrush and this egged me to move forward into the mess of nature. She protruded from a bush, barked, and dashed back in with one excited movement and I was compelled to see what she was so excited about.

Pup danced around a tree and looked to me with pure joy and flopped over onto her back and I chuckled before sweeping her up into an embrace. “Silly girl, why did you drag me all the way out here?”

She just gave me an exultant look and tipped her head ever so slight making her look unreservedly innocent. I kissed the tip of her nose and began the journey back to the cabin and laughed as she pulled at my hair in a mess of long legs and flailing yips.

A muffled movement sounded to my ears and I slowed down, checking the area with a careful eye and Pup became still, her large blue eyes wide.

Quickly, I hurried forward and a louder snap of a branch made me spin around to see a large black wolf with deep emerald eyes and surprise caught my footing and I toppled over backwards, hitting my head on an unearthed root. A suppressed cry exited my lips and Pup scurried from my grip and began barking at whatever the wolf was now growling at. Fear and pain engulfed me and the large black wolf bowed lower to the ground and launched at something that hissed in my ear.

I yelped and heard an inhuman scream and Pup finished her barking and whimpered, and sat on my stomach. The scream filled my thoughts and echoed through the forest and I wanted to disappear and hide from that noise.

The oversized wolf returned with a look of worry and its body distorted and became Josh and he looked regretful and angry.

“Vampires have infiltrated the area…I am so sorry,” he apologized and bent low, plucking me into his arms and I squeaked a protest. “Is your head okay?” he asked in a quick breath.

“I…,” I began and the pain throbbed just below my head and a headache formed, “H-headache.”

Without another word, he broke into a run and I shrilled while Pup curled into my lap, looking small and frightened. Forget the fact I hadn’t seen him in two months, I was terribly confused, frightened and in pain.

“Josh! You found her, what happened?” Kenna called and he excused her question.

“We have to go now. You know where the hatch is; you and Erin go through there. I’ll be on the other end waiting, now go,” he set me on my feet and was gone in seconds while Kenna seized my arm and pulled me after her and I struggled to keep Pup cradled in one arm.

“What’s going on?” I winced as my head throbbed and Kenna went inside the cabin and quickly emanated a great deal of light that nearly blinded me. I heard those similar screams again and she began tearing boards off of the wall and there was a small underground path and she pushed me, “Go!”

“Kenna!” I squeaked in fear and she closed us in and continued pushing me forward. I could hear the cabin being torn apart, there were screams and sounds of destruction and Pup whimpered in my arms causing me to move faster.

“Keep going, keep going, we’re going to be okay, keep going,” Kenna urged and I tried blocking out the sounds of fervent search and destruction. They were trying to find us.
