“No, I still don’t think so,” I gnawed at the inside of my cheek and tangled my fingers into intricate plates of spaghetti.

CHAPTER 20

“I think we’ll be just fine,” Kenna exerted a ray of pure confidence that I could never possess at a time like this.

“You don’t know them, Kenna they-”

“Will kill me?” She grinned widely as if I told an amusing joke and I scowled. She had no idea…

“Kenna, they’re hunters…”

“I’m Wolf Loved.”

“You’re way too confident, you know that right?” I scowled and folded my arms.

“Erin, if Kenna happens to fail us, I can surely win them over with my charm,” Josh assured me.

They really saw this as a joke, didn’t they?

“Your charm?” Kenna snickered and Josh gave off a hurt expression.

“Guys, really, please. Josh, you said you had seven other properties, why this one?”

“It’s the one Garion saw the most sentimental value in. He met MaKenna while we were staying there,” he said obviously.

“If he doesn’t have his memory, he wouldn’t go there! And if he did have his memory, he would have found you both by now!” I was getting frustrated and anxious as the surroundings looked more familiar with each passing hour.

“Well, we’re almost there either way,” Kenna said, her tone going flat.

“I’m sorry…I just…”

“Don’t want to go home? I got that,” Kenna said sourly, “Erin, you wanted to help, remember? This is a part of helping: taking risks.”

“I really don’t want to see my cousins try and kill you,” I quietly hissed as if they were hiding and watching us right then.

“They won’t try and kill me. I went to your party. They know I’m your friend,” Kenna pointed out and I wanted to hit something in frustration.

“You didn’t stay long enough for anyone but Clay to meet you!...oh…,” the thought of Clay registered something and I smiled. He could back me up! He could assure Drake and Al that Kenna was a friend! And he would do it too…Clay had always been a loyal and promising friend.

“The shy guy? Oh, he is so in love with you, you know,” she smiled and my cheeks flushed.

“Is not, Clay’s a friend. And don’t change the subject! We might as well march up to Asmodeus and ask to stay in his fortress of doom.”

“Fortress of doom?” Josh asked from behind us now and I waved a hand through the air wiping that thought away.

“Please, you don’t understand, Drake and Al-”

“Erin, you’re right. I don’t understand. Why are you so scared of your cousins?”

“I’m not scared of them, I’m scared on how they’ll react to you two…I don’t want them to try and kill you. And if they don’t manage to kill you they’ll make sure I’ll never see you again and…”
