Air bit at my skin and the forest’s trees danced until they became one blue and the scream of the wind and children only pressed Josh to move faster and he did. My fingers became cement around his fur, locked in fear, and my entire body was seized up so I wouldn’t become the equivalent of a kite and fly from the safety of this emotionally destroyed wolf.

Safe indeed.

CHAPTER 17

I didn’t dare look back, in fear of seeing nothing but a sea of children attacking Kenna and I wanted to cry, knowing she had been left behind with Asmodeus. In fact, that must have been her initial plan.

“We have to go back! Josh go back!” I cried out in fear of my best friend’s life and he showed no mercy for my pleas and kept his running at a steady rhythm. “She can’t face him on her own! Turn around! She’s going to get herself killed; she’s going to die; she can’t do this!” I cried and he came to slow stop and for a moment I was sure that I had convinced him to go back for her.

However, his wolf body disappeared and I found myself in his arms and he looked broken, “I’m sorry, dear Erin. Please don’t cry…Kenna knows what she’s doing. She’s strong and smart.” He placed my feet on the earth and the movement made my head scream in defiant protests.

“No, no, no,” I protested and held my head as the throbbing became more apparent, “We…she needs help…”

“Have faith in our wonderful WolfLoved. Come, dear Erin, it isn’t safe here,” he pulled me and Pup to the edge of a sea of still water and an expectant expression filled his face. “There’s an underwater cave down there…how long can you hold your breath?”

“I…I don’t know,” I felt more tears prick in my eyes and I stole a glance to the direction we had run from. No sign of Kenna.

“Okay…Erin, please, I need you to take a deep breath and hold it,” he begged and I knew I could resist that demand and try to return to Kenna. But it didn’t seem to be the wise thing to do.

In defeat, I bowed my head and looked to Pup, “But she can’t hold her breath! I’m not leaving Pup up here. And Kenna is out there fighting Asmodeus by herself! She may be a WolfLoved and possess a great deal of power but she cannot face him on her own! No one can! He’s the beginning of the vampire race! He’s in the boogie monster’s nightmares! If he wanted her dead, she would not have a chance of surviving, but I doubt that’s what he’s after. Asmodeus feeds off power, he will want her power…and he’ll take her alive! She needs help!” I ranted and he seized my shoulders and starred me down.

“Erin, if I cannot protect her, then I must protect you. You will not return there and I am not leaving you alone here. We cannot help her now. The most we can do is remain safe,” he persuaded, “Now hold your breath now or else you’re going to drown.”

He grabbed my arm and was swallowed by the water and I only had a second to take a deep breath of air and worry for Pup infiltrated me as she held tightly against my chest.

The cold water engulfed my body and stabbed my skin and open cuts with a salty caress and I was pulled deeper into the abyss of the darkness and fear crowded my body as my lungs cried for air and I was suspended in the water.

For a brief moment, I thought I was going to drown and I needed to pull from Josh and go to the surface; I needed air. However, his hold was relentless and I was sure then that it would be wolves that claimed every life in my family.

With a sharp jerk at my arm, my body resurfaced above water and I gagged, choking on the mouthfuls of air. Pup shook in my arms and sputtered a few times, leapt from my arms, I let out a cry of protest and Josh pulled me out of the water and into a small cavern.
