PREVIOUS CHAPTER
She looked past me and frowned then lowered her head, “I have something to do…but I will come. Later today.”
I nodded, frowning slightly, “Okay…” I knew that this wasn’t an argument I could win. In fact, it was a rare and joyous occasion when I could even pose a supportive argument against her.
“Erin!” Al bellowed from the house and I gave Kenna a small laugh.
“I better go then…see you there!” I grinned and spun away, hearing her leave. There was something Kenna hid, but I knew it wasn’t bad. Her eyes weren’t just gorgeous, but they were good. Genuine. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen eyes like hers.
CHAPTER 2
I lowered my own head and broke into a steady jog, “Here!”
“You’re in the woods?” Al said, there moments later after I gave up my position.
“Yes…we live right by them…,” I pointed out and gave his shoulder a friendly punch, “Lighten up.”
“Erin…,” he cautioned with his chestnut and blue eyes and I hugged him, catching my poor cousin off guard.
“Please don’t make me feel like I’m being forced to stay here,” I begged.
“We just want you safe,” he said.
“You’re hardly a week older than me and you act like I’m five.”
“You’re five times smaller.”
“I can fit into smaller hiding places.”
“I don’t hide. I hunt.”
“Good for you,” I said and averted my eyes. Drakes and Al’s occupation made me sick. They were slayers, or as they said, hunters. They killed nuisances of other…species. It was a family business I never took up.
“Erin…,” he sighed and started back to the house, seeming disgruntled.
“Al…,” I mocked his tone and abruptly felt the odd urge to burst into song with a source of inexplicable music. In a ray of sunshine, I danced to the cottage, completing it with a tight spin that nearly sent me toppling over into Gram’s garden that gave life to herbs and remedies that healed wounds that Al and Drake came home with.
Al couldn’t help but crack a small smile, giving me time to wedge in and free the rest of his grin. “Anyways, I don’t being out in the woods is so bad at all, because I’d be far from people, meaning my klutzy habits wouldn’t kill anyone! Quite the up side don’t you think?” I analyzed and beamed as he smiled, shaking his head.
“You’re as insane as they get.”
“It really isn’t easy.”
He sighed, exasperated, “You’re seventeen…”
I blinked in surprise and was caught off guard. I was seventeen. Yesterday, I was a mere sixteen-year-old girl, oblivious to the world…today I am a famous philosopher, discovering entirely different universes that work these worlds. I laughed at this idea and skipped with clumsy feet into my home.
“So, did you ever find your sweetheart?” Al asked with a mocking grin.
“No!” I scoffed, turning a burgundy red that hid the freckles that dusted my nose in soft browns.
