It had bothered him for the rest of the morning. It sat at the back of his mind and ate away while the others went on with daily chores. He figured if he was quiet about it he would be able to slip away unnoticed and return before anyone became suspicious. He picked up his knife and stalked over to an available car. The keys were in the ignition and he felt like he owed the person who left it there a thank you. He shifted the gear in reverse and was about to back up when he saw the frowning face of his fiancé in the rear view mirror. He flinched and sighed, defeated. Her arms were folded and she tapped her foot impatiently. He slid out the car before he caused trouble.

“And just where do you think you’re goin’?”  Her voice was filled with irritation.

“I forgot something at that clothing store.” He was really bad at lying and of course she knew that.

“Now Glenn,” she said darkly. “You best be telling the truth here.”

“Maggie,” he sighed. “I need to do this one on my own.” There. That wasn’t exactly lying.

She stood firm. “I’m comin’ with. No need to loose anyone else.”

Glenn’s shoulders and jaw dropped in desperation while his relaxed into his “I give up” look. There was nothing he could do about Maggie coming with, so he just had to be extra discreet.  She chattered on in the car and Glenn just nodded and smiled at appropriate times. He pulled up at the back entrance of the department clothing store. He preferred going in the back.

“I’ll be five minutes. Wait here.” Glenn was overjoyed when he saw Maggie comply with his instructions. There was a first for everything, he smiled. The thing with Glenn was that he was quick and quiet in every single one of his runs, and this one would be no different. He was perfect with the job. He barely made a sound as he turned the knob of the door and crept inside.

The store looked the same. He licked his lips and moved over to the jewellery counter.

And there it was. Behind the glass sat a gold (or bronze) ring with a green emerald on it. It was probably dirt cheap and some kind of alloy, but Glenn didn’t care. The minute he saw it earlier this morning, he knew it would be perfect. Unfortunately, things have lately been against his favour during runs. He was about to break the glass earlier on when he heard a car pull up in the front. He was gone before his visitors had time to realise anyone was even there. But now nothing stood in his way. He used the handle of his knife to break the glass as quietly as possible. He meticulously picked up the ring and allowed himself a minute to admire it. Weddings weren’t possible in this world anymore but he knew this would make it official for him and Maggie. Then he heard it and dared to turn his head to the side. A herd of unsuspecting walkers travelled through the streets in front of the store. Glenn’s breathing picked up rapidly and he went into a panic. He noticed the door of the storage closet was open and he made a run for it. He knew he shouldn’t have to worry but better be safe and wait it in the safety of the closet. He sat in the corner and leaned his head against the wall. A heap of clothes caught his attention in the dim light. Glenn reached out and picked up a pair of old jeans and a dirty shirt. He figured it belonged to the survivors who had stopped over earlier.

“Glenn!” He heard Maggie cry out. “Why in the world are you taking so long?”

Glenn closed his eyes and mumbled “Oh no, oh no.” to himself.  Maggie’s cries became more panicked as she discovered the store empty. Glenn heard from inside the closet how the glass shattered from the front entrance as walkers tore through.

“Son of a bitch!” he heard Maggie curse and fire shots.

Glenn bolted out the closet and grabbed Maggie’s hand. He led them to the back entrance and they scrammed inside the car. Glenn sped off without looking back. He patted his pockets until he felt the ring. He fist bumped into the air repeatedly while shouting out in victory. He even honked the horn.

“Have you lost your dammed mind?!” Maggie yelled at him.

Glenn drove the rest of the way home quiet, but happy.

 --

“Have you seen Glenn?” Maggie asked whoever she passed. Eventually someone pointed her towards the small field through the trees. She groaned and trekked through the forest. She found Glenn throwing a blanket down and flattening it. It had just settled down into evening and the stars shone bright in the sky. The grass was long and thick. Maggie saw two plates with some rabbit legs on it.

“What are you doing?” she asked.

Her voice startled Glenn which made him jump.

“I thought we could have a romantic dinner tonight.” He said shyly.

Maggie chuckled and glanced to the side before sitting down next to him on the blanket.

“The chef promised me this is the finest rabbit ever to be served. I think it was flown from the fields of France.” Glenn joked as he handed her a plate. Maggie giggled and they ate in comfortable silence.  When they finished Glenn pushed their plates to the side and lay down. Maggie laid down next him with her head on his chest. She heard his heartbeat pick up speed.

“What’s wrong?” she asked quietly.

“You know I love you, Maggie.” He stated.

She nodded into his chest.  “Of course.”

Glenn shakingly got up and gently lifted Maggie up to do the same. He got down on one knee.

Maggie was about to speak but Glenn interrupted her. “Please, don’t ruin this for me.”

The tiniest smile began to form on her face.

Glenn pulled out the ring from his pocket and held it out.  His voice was shaking from nerves.

“Maggie I…” he trailed off. “If there’s one thing I know for sure in this world, it’s that I want you and only you. I love you and I will always be here for you. Marry me, Maggie.”

Maggie nodded and unable to hold it back let a single tear leak down. Glenn slid the ring on her finger and stood up. Their mouths met and they melted into each other. Glenn pulled back after a minute of this.

“It is a yes, right?” he asked unsure.

Maggie laughed and beat her fist against his chest. “Yes you dummy!”

Glenn’s face broke into a wide grin. “Ha! She said yes!”

With that he pulled her to the ground with him and they did what married couples do.

For the purpose of this book, Glenn never gave Maggie the ring back in season 3. And where do you think Glenn and Maggie are held up? reviews? Sorry for drifting away from Daryl and Robin, trying to keep the suspense. Next two chapters will introduce some new people too, enjoyy
