Beth twisted around in pain. She kept looking at the bone sticking out her leg. It was bloody and messy. How does on ego about healing a broken leg in this kind of world? How does one survive with a broken leg in this world? Beth looked around, desperately searching for her gun. It lay at the top of the slope and it taunted her. Her machete lay on the ground close by. She tried shifting to the side to get closer to her weapon, but the pain that followed was excruciating. She yelped out and tears of pain trailed down her dirt stained cheeks. Damn. Beth had thought about her current predicament. She would be fine and back at the camp with a working leg right now, if it wasn’t for Daryl and Robin. But somehow the emotional pain of seeing them together was still worse than her bone sticking out. Beth froze when she saw the walker that grabbed her earlier snarling at her from the top of the slope. It took another step and stumbled down the slope. It landed on its face, but looked up and snarled at Beth. Beth dragged herself backwards, crying out from the pain she put herself through each time she shifted just an inch. The walker used its hands to crawl forward, ever so slowly. Beth was once again, in deep shit.

Daryl flew through the words. He jumped over tree roots, pushed past a walker or two and flung branches out the way with his crossbow. He occasionally heard Maggie’s voice behind him, yelling at him to slow down, but he never did. He stopped once or twice to make sure he was on the right trail. He heard the gunshots a while ago, and he wanted to hope so badly that it wasn’t Beth and that she wasn’t in any trouble. But then again, Daryl didn’t hope for shit. This went on for a while: Daryl frantically running through the woods, Maggie chasing after him. Daryl already lost Glenn today and he didn’t plan on losing Beth too. Then he heard the faint cries of a desperate young girl. Daryl slid to halt and listened intently. Maggie ran past him and turned back, looking back in question.

“Why’d ya stop?” she yelled.

“Shut up!” He yelled back. He listened again. They both heard this time.

“Beth! Beth where are ya?” Maggie called out. Daryl turned to his left and noticed a dent in the bushes there. He swatted them to the side and peeped through.

“Dammit, Beth! Hold on!” Daryl stepped back and leapt forward. He landed on the ground with a thud. Both the walker and Beth paused to look at the fallen man. Daryl rose steadily, loaded his crossbow and shot the walker, quite pathetically, in its head. The snarling stopped, but Beth’s cries grew louder.

“What the hell happened to you?” Daryl asked while inspecting her ankle from where he stood.

Beth answered in various forms of cries.

“Daryl! Is Beth alright?” Maggie’s voice was heard.

Beth’s head snapped up. “Maggie! Maggie!” Beth’s voice was a mixture of joy, glee and pain. Maggie peeped through the same bushes Daryl jumped through.

“Beth! Your leg!” She cried out.

“She’s alive. She’s alive.” Beth breathed out, while she winced.

“Maggie come down here, I’m gon’ need help getting’ Beth out.”

Maggie didn’t need to be told twice. She sat down at the edge of the slope and skidded down. She stood up, dusted herself off and smiled for the first time that day since Glenn’s death.

Daryl and Maggie skilfully worked together to get Beth out the ‘valley’. Daryl hoisted her up by her arms, and Maggie held her legs. It was the most pain Beth had even gone through, but it had to be done. Every time they moved, Beth screamed out in pain. They trudged up the slope, ever so slowly, but finally made it to the top. By this time Beth was close to blacking out, but she held on. Daryl and Maggie each put an arm around Beth’s waist, and Beth hung onto their shoulders, as they began the painful journey back to the camp. It was dark already and they all were quite vulnerable at the moment. Lucky for them, they never encountered one walker. By the time they reached the camp, all three were exhausted. Robin took one look at Beth and hopped to her feet. She helped Daryl and Maggie sit Beth down on the log by the dead fire. Robin went to fetch the medical aid kit they kept in Tara’s tent. Robin took a closer look at Beth’s leg and made an announcement, “I’ll have to clean the wound as best I can, then splint it. It will hurt like hell, but it’s either that or she has to lose it.”

Beth looked at Robin accusingly, “Oh, you’d just love to chop my leg off.”

Robin stared at her. “I don’t know what ya talkin’ ‘bout.”

Maggie stared at the two bickering, and then at Daryl. Daryl stood motionless, a distance away from the three girls. Maggie watched his blank, emotionless face as he watched Beth. Maggie wondered what exactly happened in this camp.

“Y’all pack your stuff; let’s get back to the farm.” Maggie said aloud.
