WORDS UNSAID

•••

Valeriana placed her hands on her waist. "What the hell, Corvan?"

Corvan merely frowned at her words, closing his eyes and turning his back towards her, "What is it this time?"

"How could you?" Valeriana asked.

The first ranker shrugged off his coat and threw it on his bed, "I don't know what you're talking about."

Val rolled her eyes, directing her gaze towards the ceiling and groaning as if she wanted some help from above.

"Zion's lost his memory," she said.

A deathly silence ensued in the room after her words. The Arlandian prince had frozen in his place, his body rigid as he slowly turned around to face her, "What?!"

She nodded, folding her arms across her chest, "Yeah, he doesn't remember anything about us or the academy, as far as I know."

An unidentifiable emotion flashed across Corvan's eyes. It was so quick that Valeriana didn't have time to decipher what it meant. Corvan abruptly turned his back towards her.

She sighed and began trudging towards where he stood, "Corvan, look at me."

He hesitated a bit but did so nevertheless.

"What came over you today? You've been acting so . . . aggressive. I don't get it."

The first ranker bowed his head and muttered. "I'm not too sure myself."

Valeriana waited. She felt as though there was something else he wanted to add. Some unsaid words that needed to be uttered. A moment passed. The silence that stood between the two of them was somewhat tense.

Corvan looked into Val's eyes once more, swallowing hard as she searched his gaze.

"Is there anything you want to tell me? What's bothering you, Corvan?" she asked him.

He opened his mouth to reply but shut it once more, as though he'd just realized something.

"Nothing," he said, walking past her towards the door.

A sigh of disappointment escaped Val's lips as she muttered under her breath, "Okay."

"I want to apologize for my innate actions today, though," Corvan told her, "but, that isn't enough, especially after you've informed me of Zion's condition."

She tilted her head towards him, "So, what are you going to do?"

"Help him recover in whatever way possible," Corvan said. "It's only fair that I do so since I . . . " he trailed off, clearing his throat in the process.

Valeriana smiled. "Sounds like what a good leader would do."

The fifth ranker walked towards where he stood at the door, "I'll come with you. That is, if you want me to," she added the last part of her statement in a hasty manner.
