♠chapter twenty eight♠
EMOTIONSCorvan had had enough of the day. His nose had scrunched up in distaste too many times, especially when Alovia had started talking to him. The first ranker had not hesitated to quickly brush her off and promptly walk away without even looking back when she tried bringing up the subject of the Wylden Cosmos. Deep down inside, the Arlandian heir already knew who was worthy of keeping the fire grounded.
As he passed the numerous people on the ballroom floor, Corvan couldn't help but inwardly scoff at all the revered greetings and venerated salutations that were thrown his way. He neither spared a glance nor a nod of acknowledgement at anyone. All his life, he was used to such feared respect and Corvan disliked sugarcoated behavior that only manifested when he was around.
He caught sight of Rowe and quickly trudged to him.
"I assume that we are done here," Corvan addressed the second ranker who had been chatting with a brown haired girl. The girl seemed to cower under the cold glance that Corvan gave her which implied a swift dismissal.
Rowe smiled. "That wasn't necessary," he said as he watched the girl who had just scampered away. "Why are you in a rush?"
Corvan fixed his cravat. "There are matters I need to follow up on and attend to."
"You mean checking up on Zion?"
The first ranker narrowed his eyes. "How—"
"When it comes to you, Lord Corvan, almost nothing escapes me."
Corvan looked away from Rowe's amused eyes. "I intend to clear my conscience and even so, I hardly care if people speak of what happened to Zion."
Rowe chuckled. "My lord, there comes a time where it will not be wrong to show that you care and are concerned over things that you may deem as trivial matters," he paused, looking steadily at the first ranker. "Besides, you are going to rule Arlandia someday, and with an iron fist, I'm quite sure. But never hold back from being concerned and showing feelings."
"Nonsense," said Corvan. "Feel too much and you're considered weak. Emotions are a vulnerability."
"I beg to differ," said Rowe in a somewhat serious tone. "Emotions can be your greatest strength, Lord Corvan. You'll eventually learn how to gain the balance between not letting the fear of feeling consume you and allowing the emotions propel you to do the right thing."
Corvan huffed as he walked away. "I do not wish to be a slave of foolish emotions."
Rowe stared after Corvan, shaking his head. He let out a hopeless sigh. Thereafter, he noticed that the Arlandian heir had slowed his steps and was scanning the people in the ballroom.
"The ladies are gone," commented Rowe, and the first ranker could tell he was smiling.
Corvan frowned at his statement. He decided not to dwell on it too much as Charles, Keelan, Brindon and Raziel caught up with them after following up on the roles that they had been assigned.
They exited the castle and made their way towards the portal that would take them back to the academy. Tomorrow would be the final day in the preparations.
For now, Corvan decided to focus on who he was about to see and make amends with.
