DANCE WITH ME

The smell of foul smoke was in the air, and Yegon inhaled some of the ash that lingered in the atmosphere. It clogged her throat and the tears automatically filled her eyes. The cinders that floated around her nipped at her skin, but the terror coursing through her veins made her barely aware of the hot air surrounding her.

What do I do? Yegon thought to herself, sniffing.

Her eyes strayed to the love of her life. Quiden was still mumbling in agony as he blindly stretched out his hands, searching around, clawing at the ground, but then retreating once he got too close to the lava.

She glanced at the fissure in which Krodd had plunged into after risking his life to save Quiden. Her heart squeezed at the sudden loss. Krodd, sweet Krodd was gone, and she hadn't been in any position to save him.

A loud yell from one of the strays caught her attention. She looked towards Wyren, and saw her struggling against the hold of a soldier, who had somehow built a mound bridge to cross over a fissure of lava to get to the strays.

"Let me go!" Wyren tried to break free. "Let go of me!"

Yegon had to do something. It was up to her to save everyone.

She closed her eyes and let the fear of the lava subside. This was her element. She wasn't supposed to be afraid of it. She was supposed to bend it to her will.

Taking deep breaths, she blocked out the noises that surrounded her and tried to calm her racing heart. In that moment, all she heard was the quiet that she needed in order to gather her thoughts and know what to do next.

She took a deep breath in.

Hear me out, Arland, she whispered. Come to my aid, Denovega.

She exhaled.

I need you to help me save these people. I need to get them to safety before everyone gets burned and drowned by the lava.

She inhaled.

Please, help me.

She breathed out.

Please. I beg of you.

"PLEASE!" Yegon let out suddenly, her voice piercing the calmness that she had just endured. Warmth coursed through her chest and to her arms, and she slowly felt the power of the magma beneath her move whenever she shifted.

Yegon moved her right hand as gracefully as she could. The earth beneath her right side trembled a bit. A smile teased her lips. She stamped her left foot on the ground and felt the red orange liquid under it react to her movement.

Yegon's heart fluttered excitedly in her chest after the discovery of her oneness with the lava. She did not know if it was simply her will that made her tap into whatever power she was wielding as of the moment, or if Arland and Denovega had come to her aid somehow.

Whatever it was, Yegon decided to not dwell too much on it and instead focus on saving the strays and Quiden. She looked towards Quiden who was still writhing in pain and agony as he rubbed his eyes, groaning. Realizing that Quiden had gone blind, Yegon knew she had to do something out of the ordinary without hurting herself. She frowned in deep thought.

If Quiden could not see her, then perhaps, could he hear where she was? Or even feel where she stood to get to her?

Yegon's eyes widened in excitement. Of course he could! If Quiden would be able to use the technique of seismic sensing that the strays had taught them, then he would definitely get to her!
